There is a historical connection of Kamigamo Shrine and a horse.  **  Kasagake &Kokasagake Festival (horseback archery)

YouTube 動画

Every year in September at Kyoto's Kamigamo shrine you can see the Kasagake festival. Kasagake is one type of Japanese traditional archery, and one of the arts practiced by the Samurai. It consist on shooting an arrow using a bow, while riding a horse. The difference with other Japanese archery styles, such as Yabusame, is that in Kasagake the archer shoots targets called "ko-kasagake", located on both right and left sides of the horse, at ground level. For this reason it is considered a more "realistic" performance.  The festivity will be held on sunday that falls in between Oct 17 tand 23. It is just about the same time Jidai Festival held in Imperial Palace of Gosho. Yabusame Fes will be held on May 3rd at Shimogamo Shrine which is another half of Kamo Shrine in the south.

Wildlife in Kamigamo Shrine

Little gutter where you can catch clay fish : The Omonoi stream leads into this little gutter as you go farther into the forest. That’s where you can catch some clay fish!  この小さな水路へとつながっていて、ここでザリガニを捕まえて遊ぶことができます

Insects : Hanmyo  ハンミョウ ( English name is Tiger Beetle )

This is another one of colorful insect found in Japan. Just like those jewel beetle they fly around and hop around very fast. They have long jaws shaped like fang to bite into their pray. You must watch out on that part. You can spot them in Kamigamo Shrine on its ground. They are strong predators.

Hotaru Viewing   : This is one of the few spots in Kyoto city where you can see wild Genji Hotaru ( Fire flies ). They come out in mid June for about 2 weeks. It is our annual event of TGM in summer time.  Page-linkHotaru Viewing  ホタル観賞

This spot offers a great view of south.

There is a stone deity enshrined here as well.

There are two entrance to the shrine. The other entrance is connected to the residential area west of Ota Shrine. The access to the gate is little complicated from the outside but you can get there by going around the foot of the mountain. It is very simple to find from the forest inside Kamigamo Shrine.

I recommend you to have a lunch or dinner time at kitchen Pot near Kamigamo shrine. This place is located just down the street in front of the shrine as you go along the stream toward east. Very good meal that is a fusion of western & Japanese.
