Ms. Child's Pint-Sized Picassos

Greetings and salutations! Welcome to my classroom!

I am Katie Child the new art teacher for Williams Magnet. This is my first year teaching, but no worries I have been working with and teaching kids for the past 5 years. I will be guiding your child through all the wonders art has to offer.

My philosophy is that each child is unique and has unique needs, my job as an educator is to help them discover their creativity and originality in their own way while working with them to enhance it. I believe in teaching with hands-on experience, I find that learning is done best when it is connected with a real world problem that can have multiple answers.

My goal is that students in my class will feel safe and welcome.

This was taken at my graduation from Washburn University in December 2015.

When they enter my room they become a part of a community that respects, supports and collaborates with one-an-other.

I want my students to feel confident that they can apply what they’ve learned in art class to real-life situations.

I want them to develop an appreciation for the arts and to understand the reciprocal impact the arts have on them and they have on the arts. Your child will be introduced to a variety of art materials, techniques, histories and cultures. Any chance afforded me I will connect the Common Core Standards (CCSS) in our lessons to strengthen their understanding of what they learn in their regular classroom. Like you and the other teachers in my school, I am here for your child, if you have any questions please contact me.

As a graduate from Washburn University I hold a Bachelors of Fine Art Degree in  art education. I am certified to teach the visual arts to students K-12th grade.
