Victor Hugo

As well as being the main rival of Dumas, Victor Hugo, another well-known literary genius, was his close friend. They were forerunners of the Romantic movement in literature, and often backed each other politically.  For example, Dumas supported Hugo after he was exiled by Napoleon III.  However, they often quarreled as well, especially in one particular instance, when Hugo accused Alexandre of plagiarism.  They always got over their differences, though, and when Dumas eventually died Victor sent a touching letter of consolation to Alexandre Dumas fils.
