World’s first hand-held GNSS integrated rover system
Dubai, UAE. – 9 Feb'10 – Topcon Middle East releases a new GNSS solution. The GRS-1 is the world's first fully integrated dual-constellation, network-enabled RTK rover system. It is an all-in-one handheld GNSS receiver and field controller with high-speed processor, increased memory, built-in camera, compass and bar code reading function.
Features also integrated into the new system are an SD memory card slot, optional internal GSM or CDMA modem, and wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology.
The GRS-1 (Geodetic Rover System) was designed with two primary system design goals: Smaller size and weight, and lower-than-expected cost.
The GRS-1 uses the Windows Mobile™ 6.1 operating system to run TopSURV, Topcon's popular surveying software. TopSURV 7.2 adds new features and functions that are unique to the GRS-1. The receiver and field controller also has a 3.7 inch, touch screen display and its rugged construction is rated to stand a one meter drop.
In addition to the network rover configuration, the GRS-1 also has an optional RH-1 radio module that can be configured to work with existing Topcon GNSS receiver systems that are already in the market today. The RH-1 is available in digital UHF, spread spectrum and frequency channel scan UHF varieties.
All forms of radio correction that current and legacy Topcon GPS+ systems offer are supported within the RH-1 module of the GRS-1 system. This means that if a customer purchased a previous system from Topcon they can be backwards compatible.

The IP-S2 mobile survey system was delivered to the first Japanese user, the Satellite Bridge Company Limited in Iwamizawa-city, Hokkaido. Topcon invited Mr. Toshiaki Takabatake, president, as well as Mr. Shigeo Sawaya, corporate auditor, to the Topcon headquarters in Tokyo to celebrate this memorable delivery.
Mr. Takabatake said in a speech, “The Satellite Bridge is a joint venture established by five surveying companies in our region. Since its foundation, all of us keep sharing the same vision that we create new values by pursuing and implementing the best available technologies.”
“I believe the IP-S2 is the technology we need. We can add images along with 3D positional data to the digital maps. This feature will enable us to make completely new proposals to our clients, and to create new businesses.”
Mr. Sawaya said, “Using the IP-S2, we are planning to create new business models in several surveying fields that used to be unprofitable because of excessive labor and cost involved. We have several challenging projects such as data capture for road surface repair, digital mapping of forest roads, and creating hazard maps of dangerous regions.”
“The IP-S2 can solve problems that currently we are facing by its capability to acquire spatial data and imagery wherever we can drive a car. I am confident that this new solution will expand our business area.”
Norio Uchida, director and managing executive officer of Topcon Corporation, said, “The IP-S2 is designed to revolutionize the surveying and mapping workflow that exponentially improves productivity. There is clear indication that on a global scale, mobile data collection solutions will become one of the core technologies in the survey business in the short term.”
“We have set up the sales and support workforces dedicated to this technology, aiming to establish strong foundation in this new business field. I believe the technological breakthrough is one of the most powerful driving forces behind the creation of a better world. Topcon will keep supporting your innovative approaches,” Uchida said.

Topcon has received an order for 90 GPS receivers from the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI), an affiliate of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). This is in addition to the 360 receivers ordered in July.
Topcon will provide a total of 450 receivers for the GPS Earth Observation Network System (GEONET) operated by the GSI. It is expected the new systems, including additional 90 receivers, will be in operation by the end of March 2010.
In 1992, GSI initiated the introduction of Global Positioning System (GPS) Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) known as GEONET. As of November 2009, over 1,200 stations nationwide are in place providing precise positioning data to the public.
“With this addition of 90 new receivers, more than 35 percent of the GEONET stations will implement Topcon NET-G3 series receivers,” said Takashi Eto, senior manager of the Global Business Planning Group and the Asia & Middle East Marketing Group.
Topcon will also provide GPS observation/control software as well as a database management system exclusively designed for the GEONET.
“The NET-G3 has an ability to track currently planned L2C and L5 GPS signals. Upgrading the GEONET system with our technology and expertise will certainly benefit the users as soon as the new GPS signals will become available,” Eto said.
