Plant Breeding and Genetics Unit

The Unit of Plant Breeding and Genetics works with the mandate of evolving rice and pulse varieties suitable for different Cauvery Delta based ecosystems, and supplying quality seeds for the seed chain in the State. This Unit collaborates with IRRI, ICAR and private seed companies for rice research.

 

Thrust Areas

  • Evolving high yielding rice varieties suited for the Cauvery Delta Zone for different seasons.
  • Conducting research on breeding varieties for coping up with abiotic stresses like salinity and submergence.
  • Developing biotic stress resistant varieties such as resistant to Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) disease, etc.
  • Evolving lodging resistant rice varieties.
  • Evolving high yielding rice hybrids exploiting hybrid vigour.
  • Carrying out research for developing rice varieties with improved grain and nutritional quality like bio-fortification (High Zn and Fe) and product diversification (low GI, High Amylose).

Research Highlights

    Ø  Two promising short duration cultures viz., AD 07023 and AD 09219 have been evolved through hybridization     and selection. Now these cultures are in pre release stages of testing.

o   Fine grain culture AD 07073 with duration of 112 days, recorded a mean grain yield of 5758 kg/ha with 11.2% higher yield than ADT 43.

o   AD 09219 with duration of 114 days, recorded average grain yield of         5074 kg/ha which is 21.23% higher than ADT (R) 45. It also possesses good cooking qualities with head rice recovery of 67.5% and intermediate GT.

    Ø  In medium duration rice, two cultures viz., AD 08142 and AD 09493 have been developed through                         hybridization and selection, and they are in Adaptive Research Trials and Multi Location Trials respectively.

o   AD 08142 recorded an average grain yield of 6156 kg/ha in 134 days with 12.3% and 12.9% increase over ADT 49 and BPT 5204 respectively.

o   AD 09493 with duration of 135 days, recorded a mean grain yield of   6294 kg/ha with more than 20.0 per cent yield advantage over fine grain checks. The panicles are more than 30 cm long with 400 to 425 filled grains per panicle. Grains are medium slender with good cooking qualities.

    Ø  In long duration, AD 09367 with duration of 158 days has registered an overall mean grain yield of 7024 kg/ha with yield advantage of 11.1 per cent over CR 1009 (6244 kg/ha). It has 1000 grain weight of 22.6g with 66.2% head rice recovery.  Besides yield and cooking qualities, it also has non-lodging habit, resistance to BPH, stem borer and leaf folder and moderately resistant to blast, BLB and sheath rot.
