Establishment

With a view to cater the needs of the grape growers of Theni and Dindigul districts and other grape growing regions of Tamil Nadu, the Grapes Research Station was established under the aegis of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University with an total land area of 28.48 acres. The station is situated in the Shanmuganathy dam road of Rayappanpatty village of the Cumbum Valley of Theni district. The land area comes under the limit of Anaimalayanpatty @ Mallingapuram revenue village. The geographical location of the grape research station lies in 90 45’ 26.685’’ N latitude and longitude of 770 20’ 58.737’’ E at an altitude of 435.05 m above MSL. This is the only station in the state engaged in research, extension, mass multiplication and distribution of grape planting materials.

Mandate

Ø Evaluation and recommendation of new varieties for high yield, quality with market value suitable for major grape growing tracts of Tamil Nadu.

Ø Multiplication and supply of rootstocks and commercial grape varieties to the farming community.

Ø  Standardization of training system suitable for commercial grape varieties

Ø Modification of canopy management practices for high yield and quality in commercial grape varieties and Muscat Hamburg

Ø Standardization of double pruning and single cropping model for commercial grape varieties and double pruning double cropping model for Muscat Hamburg

Ø  Standardization of crop load on Muscat Hamburg to enhance the quality

Ø  Recommendation on fertilizer application based on soil and petiole analysis for different varieties

Ø  Standardization on the use of bio regulators and growth promoting substances  for commercial grape varieties and Muscat to enhance the yield and quality

  • Scientific training on canopy management and crop regulation practices for grape growers and skilled labourers.
  • Dissemination of the technologies by conducting farmers’ day, field days, training programmes and through mass media.








Climate and Soil

The climatic condition is purely tropical. The mean annual rainfall is 825 mm. The mean maximum temperature is 32.4°C and the minimum temperature is 19.7° C. The average wind velocity is 4.20 kmph. The soils of this station can be considered to represent the major soil types which are found in the deep Alfisol
