1959 -  Creation of Extension section of Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore

1962 -  Recognition of Agricultural Extension as a subject  for B.Sc. (Ag.) degree

1968 -  Creation of Post-Graduate section with M.Sc. (Ag.) degree programme

1971 -  Formation of Department of Agricultural Extension with the merger under TNAU administration

1978 -  Introduction of Ph.D programme in Agricultural Extension

1979 -  Renamed as Department of Agrl. Extension and Rural Sociology with the merger of the Department of Rural
              Sociology and became a unit of CARDS

The primary mandate of the department is to develop manpower in the field of Agricultural Extension and encourage professionalism in extension service.


  • To impart teaching and training in Agricultural Extension with a view to produce professionals at various levels in central, state government, public sector undertakings and commercial agencies and corporate.

  • To undertake research in Agricultural Extension for promoting growth of knowledge in the discipline, contributing to the formulation of social policies and strengthening development administration.

  • To organize seminars, workshops, conferences, summer/winter schools etc. for the benefit of extension workers, development administrators and other clientele groups in the topical areas.

  • To coordinate various extension activities with that of the Directorate of Extension Education and other University Departments of different faculties for enabling Extension function of the university to achieve targeted goals.


       Wide variety of research and learning resources are available such as audio-visual laboratory, department and university libraries, computer and internet facilities.
