         The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) established during 1971 has functions in Teaching, Research and Extension Education of Agriculture.The University has gained popularity in view of its quality research and education besides Transfer of Technology (TOT) programmes. The Agricultural College established during 1906 celebrated its Centenary year during 2005.

        In commemoration of the Centenary year of the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, the teaching, research and extension functions of TNAU  has been enlarged with additional function of Open and Distance Learning which is first of its kind in India among State Agricultural Universities.

        This Directorate concentrates its effort on Distance Education in addition to non-formal and continuing education. The Directorate of Open and Distance Learning, one of the constituent units of the TNAU was started during April, 2005 by renaming the Directorate of Publications. This Directorate has started offering certificate courses, PG Diploma, PG Degree courses, Diploma and Bachelor of Farm Science/ Master of Farm Technology courses through Distance Learning Mode and online mode for those aspiring for self employment opportunities.
