Cotton Research Station, Veppanthattai was started as per the Tamil Nadu Government G.O.Ms. No. 372 Agriculture (AU) Department dated 05.12.2006. The station is functioning from 09.05.2007 in an area of 22.16 ha (54.75 acres) donated by the public of Veppanthattai and Annamangalam village. It lies in 11°35’N latitude and longitude of 78°80’E at 148 m above MSL. The CRS farm is located in Perambalur-Athur high way 15 km from Perambalur town. 

The climate is mainly semi arid tropic. The mean annual rainfall is 927 mm. The mean maximum temperature is 31.4° C and that of the minimum temperature is 21.6° C. The average mean relative humidity is 66.5%. The soils are Vertisol belonging to Pilamedu series. All five blocks of farm soils are verydeep, calcareous, clayey, moderately well drained with slow permeability and low hydraulic conductivity.  The pH is 8.09-8.60 and EC is 0.11-0.23 dSm-1.
