Agriculture is the main source of income of Tiruvannamalai district and agriculture based industries are also playing major role in the district’s economical growth. Based on the request of the farmers of this district, the Centre of Excellence in Millets was proposed and an initial amount of Rs.100 lakhs was sanctioned by the Government of Tamil Nadu, to facilitate research, seed production and transfer of latest agricultural technologies related to millet production in Tamil Nadu.  The centre was inaugurated by Honorable Minister for Agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu in the presence of Honorable Minister for Information and Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu and the Honorable Vice-chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore on 10.10.2013. As per the G.O.Ms.No.193 Agriculture (AU) Department 30.4 acres of land was handed over to the Centre of Excellence in Millets, Athiyandal sparing the land available at State Seed Farm, Athiyandal by the Joint Director of Agriculture, Thiruvannamalai.
