Agricultural College and Research Institute,Madurai
          Agricultural College was established at Madurai, in 1965. It remained affiliated to the University of Madras and came later under the aegis of Madurai Kamaraj University, in 1967. With the formation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in 1971, the College became its constituent unit. Since then it has shown a steady progress, diversifying its research activities to meet the challenges of existing and up-coming problems of the farmers of southern districts of Tamil Nadu. It is located about 15Km on the north east of the Madurai city on the Madurai-Melur Road; and upgraded to the status of the Agricultural College and Research Institute, it has emerged as a strong centre for academic excellence,purposeful research and responsive extension education.
With the massive growth and development of the institute,as on today,it has a sprawling main building with 12 departments,laboratories,modern e-learning lecture halls,seminar halls and conference halls,machine rooms,auditorium and power room for uninterupted power supply during college hours. Besides,seperate hostels for Under Graduate,Post Graduate boys and girls, swimming pool,indoor room and well maintained play ground with all sports and games materials are available in the campus. A well equipped library with 67,353 books and 145 periodicals,1500 online journals and 2153 e-books are available in the campus. A well equiped computer centre with up to date hardware and software has been established for the students. For the benefit of the students, a branch of State Bank of India,Post Office, Xerox centre with computer printing is available in the campus.

           The college began with B.Sc. (Ag.) with an intake of 80 students. The system of education was changed to Trimester System in 1971. At present 150 students of B.Sc(Agri) are admitted in this campus. So far 3142 students have earned B.Sc(Ag) degree from this campus.
                 The college was upgraded into a Post-Graduate Institution with the addition of M.Sc. (Ag.) in Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry and Agricultural Entomology in 1969. The Post-Graduate Programmes in Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics, Plant Pathology, and Horticulture were added thereafter.With a rural orientation, B.Sc(H.Sc) degree programme in Food Science and Nutrition was also introduced. M.Sc(Ag) Seed Technology and Microbiology were added in 1988. In 1989, Ph.D programmes were introduced in Agronomy,Planr Breeding and Genetics,Soil Science,Agricultural Entomology,Plant pathology,Agricultural Econometries and Food cience and Nutrition. So far the college has turned out 1536 M.Sc(Ag) and 617 Ph.D scholoars.

            About 150 students are admitted to the B.Sc. (Ag.) every year through the common entrance examination conducted for the professional courses by Tamil Nadu State Government.

                  Equal emphasis on research and education is a special future of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. All the members of the staff are encouraged to do teacing,research and extension each supporting the other. Therefore, this college undertake undertake baic, applied and operational research projects both sponsored by ther institution from within and outside the country and its own proects.It collaborates with other universites and other instituions of natinal and international to broad base its research efforts. The research by the post-graduate students is valuable addition.


All the staff of various departments of this college provide advisory service to the farmers,participate in exibitions , give radio and television messages and discussion and publish articles both research and popular to disseminate technological information to farmers and extension workers. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is the major source of the contact having its beginning in 1971 as Farmer Training Centre, it became KVK in 1980 and was tranformed to this campus.
