Agricultural Research Station, Pattukkottai was started during the year 1935 to study the requirement of water for different crops of the new Cauvery delta area of Thanjavur district. Later on, during 1972 this station was converted into Multi Crop Experiment Station to cater the research needs on different crops grown in this locality. Then the station was brought under Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in 1981 and converted into a Seed Centre to produce breeder seeds in paddy, pulses and groundnut. The research activities on cropping systems were also taken up. The station was upgraded as Agricultural Research Station during 1986. In addition to breeder seed production of rice, pulses and groundnut, the research on various crops are in progress.  During December 2012, the ICAR - All India Coordinated Research Project on Palms (Oil Palm) has been shifted from Aduthurai to ARS, Pattukkottai and oil palm experiments are being carried out at this centre. An area of 2.13ha has been allocated for oil palm research activities in station. A total of 20  different oil palm hybrids received through ICAR – AICRP on Palms scheme are in bearing stage in a farmer’s holding at Peraiyur village near Mannarkudi and harvesting of fresh fruit bunches is in progress. The soil type at ARS, Pattukkottai is sandy loam which is ideal for oil palm cultivation with sufficient drainage and water sources for irrigation. In 2014, Govt. of Tamil Nadu has recognized this station as “Centre of Excellence in Oil palm” to promote oil palm cultivation in Tamil Nadu as a whole.

The main objectives for establishing “Centre of Excellence in Oil palm” at Pattukkottai in Cauvery new delta region are to introduce exotic hybrids with high oil yield from oil palm growing countries, mass multiplication and distribution to farmers. The improved clones will be evaluated and introduced in farmers’ holding at suitable sites. In the past, oil palm cultivation didn’t pick up as expected in Tamil Nadu, because of non availability of suitable planting material suiting to the local climatic conditions of Tamil Nadu and lack of processing units within the reach of farmers to process the fresh fruit bunches in time besides socio- economic issues of farmers. Therefore, there is an urgent need for strengthening the oil palm research at ARS, Pattukkottai by establishing a centre of excellence in oil palm owing to the suitability of soil and climatic conditions prevailing in Cauvery new delta region of Tamil Nadu.
