My favorite speaker last week was Eric Duval.  He spoke about how he uses learning analytics to make the learner and the teacher more powerful.  I liked his reference to the quantifed self movement and how data is being used to trigger self-reflection.

The focus this week is on “Leadership in Education.”

TLT Group Institutional Subscribers Did You Know!

One of the TLT Group’s newest subscribing colleges asked us to register the entire faculty and staff as individual TLT Group members.  This Institution set a new precedent by taking advantage of a long-standing institutional subscription benefit in a new way.  Every individual affiliated with a TLT Group  institutional subscriber is entitled to a FREE individual membership for the duration of that subscription.  We’ll be working with this institution to develop new ways to use our services and resources to support the college’s faculty and professional development goals.

sMOOChers Mid-Term Update - What are we learning from participating in the MOOC “Current/Future State of Higher Education” [CFHE12]
FridayLive! Free online Oct26 2pm ET.  online Free Register in advance

Dale Parker will summarize and evaluate our 3 categories for reflection as we participate in CFHE12 and comment on implications for adult learners:

  • Process:  Reflection about Experience (about our shared experience in a MOOC as it happens - focus on process)
  • Content:  Adaptation and Application of Resources (to our own institutions and individual situations of the information and resources provided by the MOOC - focus on content)
  • Support:  Develop New Roles (to help students learn from MOOCs)

Nancy Smulsky will review and extend her comments about the quality and variety of resources within CFHE12, the effectiveness (or lack) of interactivities within CFHE12, and the significance of being unable to view/use MOOC resources prior to the week for which they are designated.

Jane Harris will be unable to join us live on Oct 26, but will share some of her notes and list of recommended readings based on her experience within CFHE12 (and elsewhere).

Steve Gilbert will invite more discussion about the role of scheduled synchronous events within MOOCs and other online educational activities.  He will ask participants about their own experiences with synchronous online elements within larger courses, MOOCs, programs, including these and other questions:

  • In what ways are scheduled synchronous online sessions helpful to learners who prefer or need more external structure and guidance for their own learning, even when those learners are highly motivated to master the course content?  In what ways does  it matter, if at all, if the synchronous sessions are required, recommended, or purely optional?
    • In what ways do scheduled synchronous online sessions deter learners who prefer or need flexible schedules from participating in online courses, MOOCs, et al. ?  In what ways does it matter, if at all, if the synchronous sessions are required, recommended, or purely optional?
    • In what ways does it matter, if at all,  which media are used and which kinds of equipment are required for synchronous sessions?  Pure text?  Multi-way voice via telephone?  Webinar?  Two-way video?  Etc.

We will also discuss additional plans and questions to enhance our participation in the last weeks of CFHE12 and guide our preparation of final comments during FridayLive!  November 30, 2012.  NOTE:  Jane Marcus offered to prepare some notes and comments - based on her recent observations of MOOC-like developments at Stanford and elsewhere -  in time for the final session.

Engage conversation about looking back and looking forward, about what kinds of changes have been most valuable, most disappointing... perhaps some questions about ways in which you see the needs, interests, and capabilities of students changing (or not) similarly for faculty,... perhaps even for administrators and politicians! What changing teaching/learning practices and devices
seem most likely to survive? What might the long term impact be of the rapidly growing public accessibility of course syllabi, resources, materials, curriculum?

This TED presentation by Shimon Schocken: The self-organizing computer course  reminded me that the most powerful learning is learning that is self-directed and self-motivated.  I think that is what a MOOC offers, that ability to truly direct your own learning, to learn for your own enjoyment and your own focus.

I love this phrase “accidental collaboration” from Siva Vaidhyanathan presentation on Friday. I love that notion and can see how the MOOC facilitates that.  More to come.

We are experiencing the Current Future State of Higher Education MOOC together. Steven Downes calls this a cMOOC vs an xMOOC. By cMOOC he is referring the connectivism theory of learning used as a basis for design and delivery.

My experience in the MOOC this week has led me to discover that  I need to enhance my social learning networking abilities. This will help me leverage my learning in the MOOC. On my to do list this week is to enhance my understanding of Twitter.

Here is one reference that I found to be interesting. Daniel’s comprehensive review of MOOC developments
More to come.

Jennifer McCrickerd Reports on Her First Online Teaching Experience:  Follow Up to two sessions last year  FridayLive! Free online October 5 2pm ET Register Here

This week join us as Jennifer McCrickerd a philosopher from Drake University reports on her first experience teaching online last summer.

“...what I really wish someone had told me.” - Report of J. McCrickerd's 1st Online Teaching Experience Summer 2012

Jennifer McCrickerd will report on her first-time online teaching experience, the ways in which it did/didn't match her expectations, and offer advice for others who are about to begin their own first-time online teaching experience.

In October, 2011, Jennifer McCrickerd, Associate Professor, Philosophy, Drake University, agreed to teach an online course the following summer. She also offered two FridayLive! online sessions in which she thoughtfully and candidly discussed her

expectations, hopes, and fears - and asked participants to suggest how she might prepare more effectively and comfortably.

Many useful suggestions, questions, and online resources were exchanged by voice and within the text chat in the two previous sessions:  Individual Members can access the archives for the two previous sessions.  (Login will be required.)

As always, we welcome your attendance and your participation. Don't worry if you can't attend at 2 pm Eastern.  Our policy is that registrants have access to archives as do Individual Members.
