CONGRATULATIONS!!!  Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) in rural Rutherford County, NC was again ranked as one of the best high schools in the state and nation by US News and World Report.  TJCA is ranked #5 in North Carolina, and the #1 high school west of Greensboro.   TJCA is also ranked #13

As we quickly approach the end of another great school year, we urge all of our students to finish strong and to help carry on the great successes of the students who have come before them!  Please review the May testing schedules below, and help us to have 100% attendance during test dates.

·  Tuesday, 5/23 reading 3-8 EOG, English II EOC

·  Wednesday, 5/24  math 4-8 EOG 

·  Thursday, 5/25; make up for EOG 

·  Friday, 5/26 (half day) make up for EOG

Parent Forum News:


The Forum continues to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 6:00PM,  at the grammar school.  
The next meeting is scheduled for May 16.   Please help at our TJ table at the May Fest in Rutherfordton on Saturday, May 6 between 10AM-4PM!  Email jmaimone@tjca.org if you can commit to a 2 hour spot between 10AM-4PM!  

Boxtops for Education are an easy way for our school to earn needed funds for teacher classroom needs!  On the grammar campus collections continue in each classroom, and on the upper campus, we will collect these in homerooms on the 30th of each month, so PLEASE clip those boxtops and send them in with all students.

"The Second Annual Burgundy and Gold Golf Tournament is this Friday, April 28 at the Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club in Rutherfordton.  Lunch at 11:30, shotgun start at 1:00.   Sponsorship opportunities are available, contact Jolly Putnam at jollyhputnam@gmail.com for details."

LAST WEEKEND TO APPLY:
TJCA-CFA NINTH ANNUAL SUMMER SCIENCE CAMP!
We are excited to invite students currently in grades 6, 7, and 8 to apply for the ninth annual TJCA-CFA STEM Camp to be held Monday through Friday, July 10th through July 21st, 2017 at the upper campus! Follow this STEM CAMP LINK to apply, being sure to read instructions and answer questions as accurately and completely as possible-DUE MAY 1.  If you have any questions or difficulties, please contact Mr. Andrews at tandrews@tjca.org
Please note that student selection for the TJ Summer STEM Camp will be announced on May 8!

1-King Law in Rutherfordton is offering a scholarship opportunity for one graduating senior in the amount of $1,000. For more information about the application requirements, please see Mr. Hess or Mrs. Powell.

2- Gardner- Webb University is excited to offer Math Academy for high school students who have completed Precalculus.  The Math Academy is a five-day event, July 24-28, 2017, with focus on applied mathematics in statistics, finance, cryptography, technology, and geometry.  Just $25 with limited space (only 15 students).  Applications  are due by June 30.

3-Gardner-Webb University is offering a Computer Science Summer Camp July 31 - August 4, 2017 with focus on artificial intelligence, cloud computing, social and mobile networking, big data, and programming using Alice.  No previous computer science experience needed to enjoy this camp for just $25.  Limited to 12 students, so apply early.  Applications  are due by June 30.

4-Gardner-Webb University Godbold School of Business will be hosting the B.E.S.T. “Bringing Entrepreneurs and Students Together” Program for high school students July 18 – July 21, 2017.  This program is geared to rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students and is being offered at no cost to the student. For more information please see Mr. Hess or Mrs. Powell.

5-Current sophomores:

The Leadership Rutherford class for 2017/18 is looking for one rising junior from TJCA to participate in this monthly class which explores all aspects of quality life in Rutherford County.   You must be an A or A/B student who resides in Rutherford County with a desire to learn about community leadership.  See Mrs. Powell as soon as possible if you are interested. The deadline to submit an application is May 19th for students.


 6-Any student who will be at least 16 years old by June 20 and would like to volunteer this summer at Rutherford Regional Medical Center, please see Mrs. Powell for the program application.


 7-The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has announced an essay contest for students in grades 9-12. The topic is access to justice, and first prize is $2,000. For more information, please see Mr. Ziegler.


8-The Engineering Discovery Camp is for current 6th thru 8th graders and promises to provide a week of exciting challenges and new discoveries.  The camp, a partnership between North Carolina State University and Isothermal Community College, is designed for everyone and no special knowledge is needed for you to participate.  So whether you already want to become an engineer, or you would like to find out more about engineering, or you simply want a week with friends & fun, you will find what you're looking for at our camp.
