SHARK TALES

John “SHARKY” Manley

Hello to all Youth Center families! I will be appearing as a regular in our newsletter to share thoughts, ideas, triumphs, and fun anecdotes from all that we do at The Youth Center. I am so excited to launch the new Camp S.H.A.R.K. (SCIENCE – HANDS ON – ART – RECREATION – KNOWLEDGE).

In this issue I want to highlight a VERY special add-on class for the summer camp that I personally designed. It’s the snorkeling class; and if you thought it was just a class that put a mask on the kids and threw them in a pool? Think again! This one-of-a-kind class  is only found at Camp S.H.A.R.K.

Space is limited for this class…so sign up today!

Summer Snorkeling Program

  • The Plan

To create a program and an environment where youth can learn and experience snorkeling and skin diving techniques, grow in their understanding and appreciation of marine life and experience firsthand the breathtaking beauty of our ocean.

Campers will receive a certification from NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) that will serve as an official seal of their accomplishment.

  • Program Structure

The Skin Diving/Snorkeling Program will be managed in two phases.

  • Phase I – The Course

The initial course consists of two class sessions and two pool sessions. Our curriculum will focus on the following:

  • The science behind diving
  • Diving Equipment
  • Diving Safety
  • Diving Environment
  • Water Work – At Belmont Pool
  • Phase II – The Ocean Experience

  • Skin Diving equipment
  • Ocean Dive – 3 hours at Pirate’s Cove (Newport Beach)

By the completion of this class campers will feel a sense of accomplishment, build self-confidence, and gain a closer connection to the ocean. They will be safer swimmers and more knowledgeable about local marine life.

I have run this program many times and I have seen firsthand how this experience can change lives and spark a lifelong appreciation for the oceans.

John Manley, MS
Director of Camps

We're looking forward to a terrific summer!!
