S.A.D. stretching into spring

There are many parts of the world that experience some kind of winter, even if it is just colder temperatures. But you haven’t truly experienced winter if you haven’t come and stayed up north. People that live close this the north pole, or the upper northern hemisphere, go through very harsh winters with frigid temperatures, high winds, large amounts of snow and challenging travel. Many of us Northerners go through what is called seasonal depression. Seasonal depression is also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. It can cause mood changes, depression, fatigue, lack of concentration and much more...all because of seasonal changes.

After talking to a local psychologist about this disorder, it has become very apparent, that if you’re dealing with this, you’re definitely not alone. She pointed out that anyone can suffer from this disorder, there are no limits. She also brought up the fact that seasonal depression is not only linked to winter but every other season. If you or anyone you know is experiencing symptoms like these, the psychologist recommends you talk to or reach out to someone, get a therapy light, going outside more, and there are also medication and therapy services.
Seasonal Affective Disorder can be caused by a variety of things, genetics, where you live and also your mindset. Genes play a huge factor in causing this disorder. If you do have a defective gene it could very well be messing up how your body makes or doesn’t make vital chemical messengers, like dopamine and serotonin. Both of which are essential for your body to function regularly. Without these chemicals it makes it very hard for your body to transition from season to season.

Although this disorder may seem uncommon or even a little odd, over 10 million Americans suffer from it. SAD is also unfortunately more common in women than men. If you think you or someone you know is suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, some things that can help you are to get a therapy light, go outside more, talk with a professional and spend time with more friends and family.
