Each year, the O'Neill begins its selection processes anew. By the end of November 2016, over 1,300 plays had been submitted for consideration for the National Playwrights Conference and 210 music theater works had been submitted for consideration for the National Music Theater Conference. Many months were spent reading, re-reading, reviewing, and corresponding, and at the end of it, three new musicals and eight new plays were selected for development during the 2017 summer season. If you haven't already seen the line-up, please visit this page!

So much deserving work rose to our attention this year and we wish were were able to support and develop all of it. We hope that this site might serve as a small way to lend our support to these writers and their work. These projects rose through an intense, multilevel selection process. (Learn more about our readers who helped us with this process here and here.) If you love new plays, we recommend you take a careful look through these lists as we believe they represent some of the best dramatic writing in the country today. The diversity and craft in this group is remarkable!

You can see the National Playwrights Conference Finalists here. We are once again delighted to be partnering with the New Play Exchange in our support of these projects. Simply click on a play's title to be taken to a full profile of the play.

We are also delighted to share the list of finalists for the National Music Theater Conference. That list is here
