Each fall, the O'Neill begins its selection processes anew. By October, a record-breaking 1,450 plays had been submitted for consideration for the National Playwrights Conference. And by November, 285 (also a record!) music theater works had been submitted for consideration for the National Music Theater Conference. After many months of reading, re-reading, reviewing, and correspondence, eight new plays and three new musicals were selected for development during the 2016 summer. If you haven't already seen the season, please visit this page!
We wish that we were able to support and develop all of the deserving work that rose to our attention during the selection process. We hope this site will be a small way to lend our support to these writers and their work. These projects rose through an intense, multilevel selection process. (Learn more about our readers who helped us with this process here and here.) If you love new plays, we recommend you take a careful look through these lists as we believe they represent some of the best dramatic writing in the country today. The diversity and craft in this group is remarkable!
You can see the National Playwrights Conference Finalists here. We are delighted to partner with the New Play Exchange, simply click on their title to be taken to a full profile of the play.
We are also delighted to share for the first time the list of finalists for the National Music Theater Conference. That list is here.
From time to time, we may post good news about our finalists below. If you have news to share, please contact us.
