***Music gives wings to the soul and teaches it to fly. . .***

The main focus of THS's music program is to introduce all students to the love and enjoyment of music with the hope of instilling a life-long desire to continue to grow musically.

Students learn the main musical elements of music history and theory. This includes melody, rhythm, form, harmony, and tone color. The Kodály concept of teaching music is implemented with all kindergarten through fifth grade students. Kodály is an experience-based approach to teaching music that recognizes the voice as the most natural instrument and one which every person possesses; therefore, learning through singing precedes instrumental training. Using the Orff Schulwerk method, instruments are introduced beginning with the use of xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels as well as other percussion instruments. Students in grades 6-8 elect to participate in Upper School Band or Chorus.

Yearly music program highlights include an all-school Winter Celebration held in December, a spring musical in March, and an end-of-year music showcase assembly. This year’s spring musical is “James and the Giant Peach, Jr.”

“We must look forward to the time when all peoples in all lands are brought together through singing and when there is universal harmony”
