1. Students will demonstrate understanding of history
    a. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the developments in United States history from the Civil War to the present
        1. Recognize the significance of Reconstruction in the North and the South
        2. Describe the role of various ethnic and cultural groups in the western expansion of the United States
        3. Explain how the rise of corporations, heavy industry, and mechanical farming transformed the American people
        4. Analyze the causes of World War I and explain why the United States intervened
        5. Explain the effect of the Great Depression in the United States
        6. Analyze the causes of World War II and explain why the United States intervened
        7. Name major scientists and inventors in America and their effects on the United States
2. Students will demonstrate understanding of government/political science
    a. Students will demonstrate their understanding or origins and functions of the United States government
        1. Explain representative government, rule of law, and popular sovereignty.
        2. Recall and analyze the most important national symbols through which American values and principles are expressed
        3. Compare major responsibilities of national, state, and local government
        4. Describe how the United States interacts with other nations through trade, diplomacy, and cultural contacts
3. Students will demonstrate understanding of geography
    a. Students will demonstrate an understanding of cultural regions
        1. Describe the purpose and characteristics of geographic representations such as maps, globes, graphs, diagrams, and photographs
        2. Identify region changes and how people perceive regions differently
        3. Discuss and investigate culture patterns
        4. Examine how physical and human characteristics of places influence people and events over time
4.  Students will demonstrate understanding of economics
    a. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how scarcity and choice impact economic activity
        1. Explain the difference between natural resources, capital resources, and human resources
        2. Define demand and supply and how it functions
        3. Identify the operation of the government in open markets
        4. Analyze how the interdependence of countries and their trade increased throughout the second half of the 20th century
