I am extremely proud of our 5th Graders for sharing their work during the Mathematics Panels last Friday. Tasks where students have opportunities to share project-based work in writing and verbally are an important part of our curriculum at the Earth School and are one of the four hallmarks of Advanced Literacy Instruction. Our faculty and guests were VERY impressed by our students. I would also like to recognize the efforts our 4th/5th grade teacher team who made them happen!

Thanks to all who helped with the Tap Water Watch Campaign. Our two filtered water bottle filling stations are 100% funded!! I will be following up to get them delivered and installed by the DOE as soon as possible.

It’s up to all of us to guide children’s safe and healthy use of screens and digital media! Schools are increasingly dealing problems that start on social media, video games, text messaging, etc. The overuse of devices is resulting in time away from other important activities and ways of communicating. Parents ask, “When should my child have ... a phone, a social media, internet?” “What are sensible time limits for using digital devices?” “How do I monitor what my child's is doing, seeing?” Please join us for ‘Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age’ followed by a discussion about cybersafety, social media, and screen time this Wed, 5/15, at 6 p.m. This is a community event so feel free to invite friends and family. While the film is suitable for elementary students, younger children may find less interesting. There will be childcare (and pizza) for ES children, if they prefer.

Third Street Music School is hosting its Spring Open House on Tues, June 18th, 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. The open house is free and will take place at Third Street Music School (235 E 11th St near 2nd Ave). Earth School Students ages 6 (by Dec 31, 2019) to 14 will be able to meet teachers, try out different dance styles, chorus, instruments, and apply for FREE classes.

Children must attend the Open House, accompanied by a parent or guardian, to apply for tuition free classes in 2019-20. Applications after June 18 will be placed on a waitlist. Partners@3rd is open to children age 6 (by Dec 2018) to age 14 who attend a Third Street Partner public school and who have never been enrolled at Third Street (except for Third Street Preschool). Placement is not guaranteed; every effort will be made to place children in one of their activity choices. Parners@3rd classes are tuition-free for students during the first year of instruction. Second year instruction is significantly discounted, and financial assistance is available for year 3 and beyond. For more information, contact Third Street's Student Services office at 212-777-3240 ext. 17

All for now! Abbe
