THE BUZZ....

June 17, 2018

Dear Families,

As we head into the last full week of school, I want to thank everyone for making it a great year. As I always say on school tours, it’s the community that makes the Earth School great! Thanks to all the families, teachers, staff and children who have worked so hard this year “learning and growing as community.”

Graduation is this Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in the school auditorium. If you have ever attended an Earth School graduation, you know it is an amazing experience! Each graduate will share something about themselves and their time at the school. You may have already noticed the “portfolio displays” lining the hallways. Each graduate worked with an adult “mentor” to review and reflect on their work from their years in the school. Selections are displayed for the community to see. Please have a look around and enjoy!!

We will be sending Class Welcome letters and supply requests in midsummer. We will email these unless you have requested paper notices. Please be sure to inform Jocelyn of any email/address changes. You will also be able to find letters and class supply lists on our website (once you know your class). For families that are not returning, please be sure to pick up your child’s portfolio and other possessions from your class before you leave. Likewise, let us know if you something comes up and you are not returning in September so we can update our registers and fill our seats. Narrative Reports will be distributed on Friday.

PLEASE CHECK LOST & FOUND IN THE 6 TH STREET LOBBY AND SCOOTER ROOM. REMAINING ITEMS WILL BE DONATED TO HOUSING WORKS.

PLEASE RETURN BORROWED CLASSROOM MATERIALS AND BOOKS. Many of you have expressed concern about The Earth School’s funding challenges. Carmen Gunzl and I recently attended our annual budget meeting. We went through the complicated process of comparing our anticipated enrollment and funding sources against our staffing needs and expenses. For the first time in many years, our initial allocation of funding will cover basic staffing costs. While the budget is still very tight, we are relieved that we don’t have to endure a lengthy appeal process over the summer. I appreciate everyone’s support this year and we will continue to work for our fair share of funding!

LOVE,
Abbe
