Global Youth Service Day

GYSD 2014

International Background

Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) celebrates and mobilizes the millions of young people who improve their communities each day of the year through service. Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth.

GYSD is celebrated each year in over 130 countries, with young people working together with schools, youth organizations, non-profits, community and faith-based organizations, national service programs, government agencies, and adult mentors to address the world’s most critical issues and change their communities.

Local Background

In April 2013, the City Youth Council of Toronto hosted the first ever GYSD event in Canada thanks to the initiative taken by one of our Youth Councillors, Mary Zhu.

The first annual event was hosted in Members’ Lounge at Toronto City Hall. We had 25 organizations represented with a waiting list due to space constraints and over 200 attendees.

In 2014, the event was even bigger and better! We had 30 organizations represented and over 300 attendees.

Our parent organization became the official Country Partner for Canada and we received a proclamation from the Mayor declaring April 12, 2014 Youth Service Day in Toronto.
