Simply Put...

We are recommending that City Council:
  1. Examine areas for revenue from the city’s numerous skating rinks, with a particular focus on advertising along the dasher boards.
  2. Focus on local small business advertisements on dasher boards in the situation that City Council endorse advertising along rink dasher boards.
  3. Reserve at least 51% for local small business advertisements on dasher boards.

Background

There are 93 outdoor and indoor ice rinks in the City of Toronto. Hundreds of thousands of Torontonians use these rinks, be it for skating, league hockey or shinny, which makes them a perfect place for advertising. However, most of Toronto’s ice rinks remain bare, with empty white boards surrounding the rink. This is the perfect place for businesses to advertise, as their advertisement will be viewed by thousands as they skate. The City of Toronto is yet to begin advertising in most arenas, and the few that do have only a few advertisements along the boards. There is no reason that these boards shouldn’t be packed with signs.

The City of Toronto should examine areas for revenue from the city’s numerous skating rinks, with a particular focus on advertising along the dasher boards.

Should the City endorse advertising along rink dasher boards, they should place a focus on local small businesses and organizations by reserving at least 51% for local small businesses/organizations.

Amplifying the Youth Voice

At their meeting on January 12, 2013 the Youth Council adopted a motion tabled by Youth Councillor Jonathan Glustein to examine the possibility of generating revenue through the placement of advertisements along dasher boards in the city owned ice rinks.
