Potters open up the options for our year 10 students
Having worked with the The Wytham Studio, a visual arts research unit from the University of Oxford, for over four years in printmaking, we were very excited to announce to our current art students a Pottery Workshop.

We were truly rewarded with the expert presentation from Dr Robin Wilson,(Anthropologist/Artist) which went in to great detail on all areas of ceramics including the Oxford Anagama kiln www.oxfordanagama.org followed by an excellent demonstration of throwing at the pottery wheel from Anthony Eccles (Ceramicist, Oxfordshire Craft Guild).

Students were then treated to individual tutorials from both Anthony Eccles and Annie Hudson (Potter, Oxford Anagama Research Project).

Whilst students took turns at the pottery wheels the rest of the class created hand built mugs which we hope will ready to be fired in the Oxford Anagama kiln later in the year, and with the opportunity for students to participate in all aspects of the arts/anthropology ceramics project.

Iain Blake, 15, participated in the workshop and learnt the skills to throw at the wheel very quickly, not an easy task.
He said of the day “I liked the presentation of the workshop, it was very informative, and I learnt a lot from it. Not only the experience of throwing at the wheel, which was something totally new to me, but the creation of an object that may be fired in an Anagama kiln. It’s great to do something totally new, a very exciting process and I can’t wait to do more”

Students have been working with all forms of clay for their mock exams this year and this fantastic opportunity will now open up their choice in creating exceptional work over the forthcoming school year and for their GCSE’s on 2018.

The Cooper School Art team and students would like to thank the very kind generosity of the Wytham Woods team in running this workshop and look forward to many more inspirational days both in and out of School.
