Secondary School Direct Training Programme (self-funded)

trainess
The School Direct Training Programme (self-funded) is an alternative route for school based teacher-training. This is the route most frequently chosen by those working in the independent sector and by those in the state sector for whom places are not available through the other routes. All applicants through this route must be employed by a school, as an unqualified teacher, and be supported in their application by their employing school. Trainees work alongside outstanding practitioners and spend a greater proportion of their time training in the classroom and in school. Trainees following this route will attend centrally provided training on Fridays for the duration of the programme.

How long does the School Direct Training Programme (self-funded) take?

The programme is normally completed within an academic year.

Course outline

The course is an intensive programme of initial teacher education which aims to develop trainees' competence and confidence in the teaching of their chosen subject(s) and in the general professional role of the teacher.

The intention is to provide trainees with a set of insights, perspectives and information upon which they can build as their career develops and to present a stimulating, challenging and enjoyable course.

Throughout the year there is a focus upon subject knowledge and the context of education. The trainees maintain an extensive professional portfolio showing achievement in relation to the Teachers' Standards for QTS.

On this course trainees will develop the following:
  • a broad range of practical teaching skills
