Con artists from Jamaica are targeting senior citizens in the USA, fronting as legitimate companies awarding huge lottery jackpots.

In the end it's the scammers who are getting rich and their elderly victims are being left broke.

Law enforcement officials, representatives from Fairpoint Communications and senior advocates are putting out a warning... beware of telephone scams coming from the 876 area code.

Scammers are focusing on the United States because of it's large population of elderly citizens. Many of them live alone and welcome a friendly voice on the other end of the phone. Before long that person on the other end of line has convinced his victim to empty their bank account and send it to him.

Sarah Raymond's aunt in Cape Elizabeth of Maine was taken for $150,000.00.

"When I was informed she had 12-dollars and 50-cents left in her bank account, no oil, little groceries and a house that was going into foreclosure", Raymond said.

Officials say their best line of defense is to educate senior citizens and their adult children. Fairpoint Communications has created a website and is putting an informational video out with advice and tips through Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
