kinectTCP - Windows7 TCP/IP Server

KinectTCP is a TCP/IP server that offers all video, depth and skeleton services of Microsoft’s Win7 Kinect SDK, independent from specific programming languages. kinectTCP allows programmers, who do not want to deal with windows specifics of libraries and languages, to utilize the Kinect using their language of choice, e.g. JAVA, BASIC, MATLAB, PYTHON, FLASH, C#,... kinectTCP runs under Win 7, but it frees the programmer from the necessity of using a .net environment.

Plug in your Kinect, and send a single command to kinectTCP to access all RGB, Depth Skeleton and Audio data!

Features:

  • offers raw RGB data in all resolutions
  • offers depth and player ID data in all resolutions
  • offers skeleton data
  • offers depth data as XYZ point cloud, not only as depth image. Get a real 3D image from your Kinect!
  • accessible by multiple clients: share your Kinect data with multiple applications
  • remote initialization or manual initialization via GUI: remotely control your server
  • fully documented
  • Comes with JAVA client example application
  • V1.2: NEW! kinectTCP now streams audio data!

What do you need to run kinectTCP?
  • A Windows7 machine. --- kinectTCP runs on Windows7 only, it is based on Microsoft's Windows7 Kinect SDK
  • The kinect windows7 sdk driver (download see below). --- This driver controls your Kinect. It's a simple, single click download.
  • The .net Framework 4 (download see below). --- This framework contains a lot of functions used by the kinectTCP program. You can either download the framework by itself, or let it be installed automatically with Visual Studio 2010. All of this is for free.
  • The kinectTCP program. --- This is the actual program that provides the TCP server.

kinectTCP server related:

  • kinectTCP documentation, PDF file. Installation, usage, communication protocol etc. Highly recommended to download!
  • kinectTCP1.2 Executable , download this to start the server as a single executable. Prerequisites: Windows7 .net framework 4. This executable was compiled on a 64bit machine in x86 mode using the Win7 Kinect SDK v1.0 beta2x64. If it does not work, you might need to download the visual studio project and recompile. This file is most likely all you need!
  • kinectTCP1.2 Visual Studio Project, download this if you need to recompile the executable, or to examine the source code. See link below to download Visual Studio Professional.

Windows 7 related:
  • Unfortunately KinectTCP currently only works with the old beta driver, which Microsoft does not support anymore. However, you can find it HERE
  • Link to Microsoft's .net framework 4, download and install. The framework is needed if you don't have Visual Studio 2010 installed on your machine.
  • Link to Microsoft's Dreamspark website, to download Visual Studio (if you are eligible). Choose Visual Studio Professional.
