Country Girls Can Code

January 21, 2017
ShadowGlen Elementary, Manor ISD

Through the collaboration of Techs4Tex and Women Who Code Austin,

fifty-one students participated in our 2nd Annual Girls' Day Out- Programmer Style!

Girls in 9th-12th grade, and their female sponsors, were invited to travel to a day of exploring computer programming and careers. Because of generous donors, we were able to offer hotel accommodations for the previous evening, so the students were able to get a full day of coding activities on Saturday.  They met women currently in careers relating to technology and worked together coding to build websites and apps.
More than half of the students had no previous coding experience.

This event was especially designed to give female students from rural communities the opportunity to build capacity for computer science careers.
Country Girls Can Code featured Sara Calderon and volunteers from Women Who Code Austin as our mentors for the event.

Was the event a success?  Check out these photos and decide for yourself!

If you participated in this event and would like to see additional photos, please contact your school sponsor or volunteer coordinator.

See you next time, and keep coding!
