Needs Assessment

The role of assessment in an emergency is a critical and ongoing step in determining humanitarian needs and meeting obligations to humanitarian principles. Assessments help to identify the most appropriate response options to an emergency and what added value your organisation can bring to an emergency response.  Through assessments, humanitarian organisations gain accurate data about the needs and operating context, and engage with local communities and other humanitarian actors in the affected area - it is a critical step in programme planning

ACAPS have developed a series of online training modules on Needs Assessments, covering:

  • Key Concepts

  • Decision Making

  • A Needs Assessment Framework

  • The Good Enough Principle

  • The Assessment Cycle

  • Basic Principles

Each one should take between half an hour and 45 minutes to complete and they can be accessed via the Interactive Module link on the right.

Tearfund templates for Needs Assessment can be found in the Further Reading Section.
