Overview 2018 route

Day 1 – Vientiane – Thabok

 117 km – flat as a pancake

We will start in the morning at Patuxay and take some backroads out of the city. We will then ride in a northerly direction towards the impressive plateau of the Phou Khao Khouay national park and then follow the contours of the park towards the Mekong again. We will ride up to the town Thabok where we will be staying overnight. During the course of the day we will ride over some pretty flat terrain, with a mix of tarmac and dirt roads.

 Day 2 – Thabok – Muang Hom

 100 km: Valleys and villages

Early birds as we are, we will have another early morning start and we will be on the road right after sun rise. This time we will start off on paved road. Going down on road 13 South, on the left hand side we see the mountain range of Phou Khao Khouay, and on the right hand side we will see and follow the Mother of rivers, the Mekong. This we will do for 35 km, before we make a turn towards the mountains and change the tar for our trusted dirt and dust. We will go up the mountain on a single track in a deep and steep valley. After some serious climbing, we will get to a plateau with gentle incline. Passing through several ethnic minority group villages such as Hmong, Lisu and Khmu we can enjoy a passive participation of daily life in the country side. The day will end in Muang Hom, where we find our accommodation for the night.

Day 3 – Muang Hom – Thalat

60 km cycling & 20 km by boat: Lost and alone

Day 3 will start as any other day with a early kick off. At sunrise we start on paved road going towards the direction of the famous Special Zone of Xaysomboun. Following windy roads we go deeper into the an area unknown by expatriates and locals. On the side of the road we will pass by agricultural land and may have chance to get a glimpse of how people make their livelihood in this area. After 7 km we will take a turn left and we exchange the tar for dirt and dust. This is the point where we start to get the feeling that we are lost and alone. This area is very sparsely populated. Going through farms of rubber plantations we will make our way to Nam Ngum reservoir and boat landing at village Lak 516. From there we will have to leave the support car behind us and we will cross the lake by ferry. On the other side of the lake our accommodation with refreshing pool is waiting for us.

Day 4 – Thalat – Vientiane

 125 km - home stretch

After a good night sleep and monster breakfast we will leave Thalat and head out towards the Phou Phanang nature reserve. In this beautiful mountainous region we will ride over single tracks and enjoy the nature. Once we get out of the park we will slowly make our way towards Vientiane. We will finish this epic ride at the place where we started, the Patuxay monument.

During the course of the day we will ride over some moderately hilly terrain, with a mix of tarmac (50%) and dirt roads (50%).
