Sign Norman Borlaug's Memorial Card

At Norman Borlaug's memorial in 2009, Professor Swaminathan said...

“The five principles Dr. Borlaug adopted in his life were (to use his own words): give your best; believe you can succeed; face adversity squarely; be confident you will find the answers when problems arise; then go out and win some bouts. These principles have shaped the attitude and action of thousands of young farm scientists across the world. He applied these principles in the field of science and agricultural development, but I guess he developed them much earlier in the field of wrestling, judging from his induction into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004.”

Poll: 29 percent of Iowans have to go hungry sometimes

DM Register, Sharyn Jackson

As world leaders and agricultural scientists gathered in Des Moines to discuss world hunger, Iowa AARP released statistics showing it’s a sizable problem here at home.

Almost one in four Iowans has experienced food insecurity or gone through a period without regular access to food, according to a new poll by the group.

Twenty-nine percent of Iowans say there has been a time when they or someone in their household did not have the money or resources to buy food. Forty-five percent know another family member, neighbor or friend who is food-insecure. Additionally, one in six Iowans worries about running out of food before finding the money to buy more.

The Hunger in Iowa report was released at the Iowa Hunger Summit, a daylong event held during World Food Prize Week, dedicated to focusing on the state’s hunger issues. Nearly 700 researchers, food pantry organizers, students and charity leaders from across the state attended the summit, a record number in its seventh year.

Lawmakers Target Food Stamp Funding

Food Stamps (SNAP)

"Often targeted as wasteful spending, SNAP is a highly efficient, highly effective Federal support program with extremely low levels of abuse."  - Director of Iowa SNAP

"Animal-based protein is important for child development, but many struggle with enough money/stamps to purchase animal protein.  Mothers are often forced to buy only what they can afford, the least expensive foods are often full of starch, sugar, and/or salt.  Often a bag of chips is often less expensive than a bag of lettuce. - A Place at the Table, Jeff Bridges

    • Percent of children age 6-11 years who are obese: 18.0% (2009-2010)

ENOUGH: Elanco Food Security Initiative

3 Critical Ag Numbers

  • 3 BILLION Middle-Class People added to the world by 2050.  2 Billion more people combined with a total increase in living standards equals a projected increase of 3 Billion more middle-class people.
  • 60% More Meat, Milk, and Eggs added to the world production by 2050.  The 30% increase in world population, combined with increasing protein consumption worldwide to minimum daily requirements, equals 60% more protein by 2050.
  • 1.5 Planets  to maintain the current rate of food production. It takes the Earth 1.5 years to regenerate the renewable resources use in one year.  At this rate, by 2030 the world will require double the planet’s resources to meet the population’s needs. (World Wildlife Fund Living Planet Report)

We have the solution to the biggest health problem in the world. It is time to stop discussing the problem and fix it.”
