January 11, 2018 March 16, 2018 David Barnes Schoalrship www.faithhopelife.com $2,500  David Barns was known by many for the way he fought cancer with his faith and hope for life. More than that, he was a truly special person with the ability to leave a lasting impression. An interview conducted while David was fighting cancer captured his everlasting perspective on life. David left us with this quote, “You always gotta have faith. You always gotta have hope. Because at the end of the day, if you have those, you will have life.” David’s family is devoted to continuing his legacy. He inspired the formation of David’s Faith & Hope for Life Foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting and inspiring individuals enduring hardships caused by adverse medical conditions. Additionally, the Foundation aims to continue David’s legacy as a student, athlete, and coach. During his battle with cancer, David witnessed firsthand the high cost of health care. The Foundation will devote a portion of its resources to providing financial support to individuals facing life altering medical-related conditions. Additionally, it is our hope that together we can build on David’s ability to positively impact student athletes for generations to come. The Foundation will provide annual scholarship grants to college bound students that exemplify his integrity, commitment, and leadership. Furthermore, the Foundation will continue to hold the B&D Basketball Camps. These camps were one of David’s greatest passions; he used his annual B&D Basketball Camps to teach skills, accountability, teamwork, and leadership skills. David possessed a distinct ability to share his basketball knowledge and to use it as a tool to teach young people about the game on the court, but more importantly, he taught everyone lucky enough to know him about the game of life.

It was at that time that the name was changed to Michigan Education Association. During the 1950s and 1960s the MEA became an aggressive statewide force for teacher rights and welfare, as well as other professional concerns. In 1984, active membership was expanded to include education support professionals. This brought together one of the largest single unions representing education employees. Throughout its long history, MEA has remained committed to quality education and retains a prominent leadership position as a strong advocate for public education. As one means of demonstrating its commitment to public education, the MEA has established and offers the MEA Scholarship.

Upon graduation, David became a basketball coach at Goodrich where he coached both boys and girls middle and high school teams. In addition to his obligations as a regular season coach, David used Saturday morning basketball clinics and his annual B&D summer basketball camps to teach skills, commitment, accountability, teamwork, and leadership. In March of 2011, David was diagnosed with cancer. For more than 18 months, he endured chemotherapy and radiation, complex surgeries, and intense rehabilitation. He handled every obstacle with a gentle grace and determination embodied by few. David courageously fought his competitor, cancer, to the very end. David passed away on November 4, 2012 at the age of 30. We are pleased to offer your students a scholarship created in honor of David. The David Barns Scholarship will be awarded to two high school seniors that best represent David’s academic excellence, athletic prowess, and commitment to the community.
