Since 2012, TDSB MLLs have actively participated in our ESL/ELD Speech Competition, an initiative that places student voice at the forefront. This competition aligns closely with the TDSB Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP), particularly the pillar of "Belong"—ensuring that all students feel included, engaged, and valued in an inclusive environment. Each year, participating students experience a sense of joy, engagement, and belonging, making them feel appreciated and empowered.
This initiative begins in the secondary ESL/ELD classroom and culminates in a showcase where students present their speeches in front of peers from across the TDSB. Celebrations of their successes occur at the classroom, school, and Board levels, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment. Beyond enhancing language skills, the competition also:
encourages students to develop confidence and public speaking skills, which are essential for academic and personal growth.
provides an opportunity for MLLs to share their diverse perspectives, stories, and experiences, fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment.
strengthens students’ sense of community by connecting peers from different schools and helping them build new friendships and networks.
allows educators and students to recognize and celebrate the linguistic and cultural assets that MLL students bring to the learning environment while promoting respect and empathy.
supports language development in a real-world, meaningful context, reinforcing the application of literacy skills beyond the classroom.
Additionally, the competition aligns with curriculum expectations outlined in the Ontario ESL/ELD A, ESL/ELD B, ESL/ELD C, ESL/ELD D, and ESL/ELD E curriculum. It provides students with opportunities to practice and demonstrate their listening, speaking, and presentation skills—key components of these courses. By participating, students engage in authentic communication tasks that reflect the curriculum's focus on both oral and written communication, helping them meet and exceed the standards set for developing language proficiency and critical thinking skills.
