We will be at the Safety Village today.  Next week we will have our next Vocab Quiz on the vocabulary from Ch. 11- 16.  See a copy of the words on the website.  There will be no more spelling tests after this week.  We will play games and work on activities to review our Gr. 3 Word Wall Words.  Our next science unit will be on Plants.  Please let me know if you can join us on Monday, June 12 for our trip to the Brantford Twin Valley Zoo.  If you come with us on the  bus we cannot allow any younger children to come along.  If you have younger children that you would like to bring we ask that you meet us at the zoo and pay for your own entrance fee. If you are a chaperone/volunteer (gift hours) then we ask that you take the bus with us and lead a group around the zoo for the day.  Your entrance fee will be covered.  Thanks!

May 25, 2017

Next week Thursday we will travel to the Safety Village.  We need some volunteers to help us out while we are there.  If you could join us for the morning, please let me know.  We will leave Trinity at 9 and return by 12.  You can travel with us on the bus or you can meet us there.

Character Day is on Friday of this week.  Dress up as your favourite movie or book character.

We are completing the final assignments of our Ontario unit this week.  Our next unit will be a science unit on Plants.

In math we have been working with fractions this week.  Next week we will start a unit on Time.  Please work with your child at home on time.  Discuss how much time things take, telling time on an analog clock and maybe use a timer to time your child doing different activities to see how long they take.

May 18, 2017

In grade 3 we are reading "The Good Dog" as a novel study.  Students will have a vocab quiz every Wednesday on words from the novel.  The words will be studied in class but it would be helpful to review them at home.  Every week I will post vocab words on our website.  The students have a copy to use at school in their desk.  If you would rather have a paper copy come home please let me know.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Have a blessed Easter weekend!

April 6, 2017

This week we are learning about money.  Students are learning about Canadian coins, how to count up different amounts of money and how to add and subtract money.  Students are also being tested on their multiplication facts.

In writing students completed a retell about their March Break.  We are currently reading the "BFG" as a read aloud.

There will be a spelling test on Friday.

Ontario project:

Gr. 3 Alphabet Book
(about places to visit in Ontario)

Students will be given a letter of the alphabet and they will need to pick a place to visit in Ontario that starts with that letter.  I taped a slip of paper in each of their agendas with the letter and some options to choose from.  If they can think of another place that starts with that letter then let me know.  They need to pick a topic and then start on the research.  They can do the research at home but need to print it out and bring the information to school to fill in the graphic organizer. They will then write a paragraph and a poem about their place.  They also need to make a piece of art work about their place.  The research can be done at home but the project work should be completed at school.

Due dates:
Research Due - April 13
Paragraphs and poem due - April 21
Art work and slide format due - April 24

March 30, 2017

Please find the Gr. 3 April Newsletter in the Forms and Docs section of the website.  This document will give you information about the units that we are working on.  Students should still be working on their multiplication facts at home.  Next week will be our last week of testing multiplication facts.  Have a great weekend!

March 23, 2017

In math we are still working on our multiplication tables.  Please review at home.  There will be a spelling test on Friday of this week.
In art we are looking at Ontario artists.  This week we looked at the work and life of Tom Thomson.  If you know any local artists please feel free to have your child share about them in our class.
Our next unit in Writing is Retell/Recount.  Students will learn how to write about an event that happened to them.  We are starting with a story of something that they did over March Break.

March 2, 2017

In math, students are learning their multiplication facts.  A package went home earlier this week to outline some strategies for learning multiplication facts.  Students are tested every day.  Please correct the tests that come home and learn them for the next day.  Students should pass facts up to 5 by next week.  Book orders for March are due Friday, March 3.  We will have a spelling test this week.  We will not have a spelling test next week.  We will just review our high frequency word wall words.  Please look for a Bible review sheet to come home on Monday.  Students will have a Bible test next week Thursday before the break.

February 23, 2017

Grade 3 students did an amazing job on their magnet experiments!  Thanks for your support, parents.  Next week we will begin our Socials unit called "Living and Working in Ontario".  I will give you more information about this unit in our March Newsletter, coming out next week.  Have another wonderful long weekend!

February 15, 2017

Currently there are a lot of magnets floating around our grade 3 classroom.  Students are busy typing up experiments and putting together materials.  If your child is working on their magnet experiment (the hands on visual part) then please have them bring it in on Tuesday of next week.  If your child is planning on putting together their experiment at school then all materials will need to be in by this week Thursday.  We will have time on Thursday to work on our experiments in class.  A few students have asked to bring their written work home to finish, that was fine with me.  Remember that next week Wednesday from 2:30-3:30 PM  parents are invited to come and have a look at our science experiments.

The spelling test will be on Thursday of this week.
Memory work is due on Feb. 23.
We have enjoyed hearing students share about their book reports.  Please keep up the reading at home.

Some students brought home a passage to practice for the assembly tomorrow.  They do not need to memorize it.
Have a great night!

February 9, 2017

Our magnet projects are started and students are excited!  Please arrange to bring in the materials for the project next week.  Students are still in the writing phase but will start to assemble the project/experiments next week.  I will post a list of the students and their experiment question in the forms and docs section of the website.  Please refer to this and ask them what materials they will need.  All of the written work will be done at school.  The visual part of the project can be done at home or at school.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  We will have a spelling test tomorrow and students have another Bible Memory work assignment due on Feb. 23.  Have a wonderful day!

February 2, 2017

This week we wrote a science experiment as a class and are currently conducting it.  Students will choose an idea for a magnet project this week and begin to write their own experiment in class.  Please review ideas at home.  A project idea sheet came home this week.  Please have students fill in their top 3 picks for projects and return the idea sheet this week.  A project letter and rubric went home last week.  Please review with your child at home.

A book report assignment went home this week.  Students are to read a book at home and then work on the book report.  Please have them bring the finished reports back to school so they can share with the class.  Each time they finish a report they will get a new one to work on.  My goal for the class would be for them to complete at least one book report a month.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Happy Reading!

January 26, 2017

November 24, 2016

I hope all of you are having a great week.  There will be a spelling test on Friday.  These spelling words are high frequency words that students can use in their everyday writing.  Therefore it is very important for kids to work on them a little every night to learn the spelling list words for the week.  Please keep up with the daily reading as well.  Students can work on frequency and comprehension during their home reading as.  A Bible review sheet will go home at the end of this week.  Students are to review the information at home to prepare for the test on Thursday, Dec. 1 of next week.  There will be no library next week as we will have our book fair.  Students can bring in money next week for books if they desire.  Have a wonderful day.  December book orders due this Friday to make sure the order will be in by Christmas.  Thanks!

November 17, 2016

We had a wonderful day at Westfield last week, thanks to our parent volunteers who were able to join us!  In our socials unit students are now writing questions about a building in a settler village.  In groups they will work on answering those questions and present their building in a creative way.  Students will work on the visual part of the project at school but may bring in supplies from home.  Ask your child what they may need for supplies.  I have a lot of items for them to use at school as well.

In math, students are working on mad minutes, a timed addition/subtraction test, every day.  Please see these tests coming home in the agenda.  I will only mark the ones that are fully completed as they can only pass that level if they score a 40/40.  We are working on math facts up to 12 so please study at home every night.  In Term 2 we will work on Multiplication.

Please see update from our French Teacher:

From the French Teacher:

Grade 3 Letter

Dear Parents,

Hello from the Grade 3 French classroom!  I am excited to be able to teach French to the Grade 3 students twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays.  At Trinity, we are using a method of learning French called AIM (Accelerative Integrated Method).  I teach students using hand signs for each word we learn.  These hand signs (gestures) are like a flashcard of the word to help the student understand what the word means.  Students are encouraged to speak with me as I am saying and gesturing the words.  This helps them practice pronunciation and begin to tune their ear to what French sounds like.  We are pretty active in our classroom and it is amazing to see each student add new words to their growing understanding of the French language!  This year in Grade 3, we are using the play “Le chat et la lune” as a base for our learning of new vocabulary.  We also learn new songs, games and other simple activities to help reinforce new vocabulary.  Our focus is on oral communication. Reading and writing in French will have a stronger focus later in the year.  If you have any questions about the program please do not hesitate to e-mail me at danyse.nywening@tcsonline.ca.

November 9, 2016

This week we have learned about the European settlers that came to Canada.  We are excited to see how they settled and what life was like for them in those early years when we travel to Westfield.  After our field trip students will investigate one of the buildings in a settler village.  They have chosen a building and will come up with some good inquiry based questions to guide their research.  In a group they will present their building to the class.  The work for this project will happen at school but they may bring in some materials from home.

We have started our math addition and subtraction mad minutes (timed tests of +/- facts up to 12).  The marked tests will be sent home every day.  Please make corrections on the tests as needed.  Use them to prepare for the next mad minute.

On Friday we will have a spelling test for Week 8 words.

On Friday students can bring in money to school to purchase a poppy.  We will have a Remembrance Day assembly on Friday morning.

Please read the November Newsletter in the Forms and Docs section.

November 2, 2016

In socials this week we learned about the Wendat and Anishinaabe First Nations Groups.  Ask your child what is unique about the two different groups.  We will also start to learn about the European Settlers that came to Canada.  This will fit nicely with our field trip next week to Westfield Pioneer Village.  On Thursday, November 10, our class will go to Westfield and learn about the how the European Settlers made a home and life for their families in what is now Canada.  We still have more room for volunteers if you would like to join us.  Students should be at school at 8:45 AM next Thursday as we will leave promptly at 9:00 AM.  (we will wait if there is a bus issue, not to worry)  We will return to the school by 3:00 PM.  This trip will take place rain or shine so dress according to the weather forecast of the day.  If the weather is poor they will try to keep most of our program indoors.  Please bring a regular lunch, snack and plenty of water to drink.

Students have completed a letter to their favourite author.  Once I have met with students about their strengths and goals regarding the final draft of the letter I will send the letters home with a marked rubric.  Please read over this rubric at home and let me know if you have any questions.  For most projects in Grade Three students will receive a rubric that explains the expectations for the assignment.  That is what I will use to assess their work.  For each writing project students will meet with me for a one on one writing conference.

Our next writing assignment is an Animal Report.  Please see a copy of the rubric for this report under the forms and docs section.  Students can choose any animal and bring in information from home if they desire.  We will have computer time at school for research as well.  Students will do the writing of the report at school.

Spelling test on Friday, week 7.
Thanks for the plastic cutlery that has come in!
Reminder for headphones for computers if your child has not brought any in yet.

Oct. 26, 2016

We had a great, although short, week in Grade 3.  We are starting to take a look at the First Nations Groups that originally lived in Canada.  At first we shared what we knew about these First Nations Groups.  Some students shared that they thought their Mom or Dad was from a First Nations group in some way or another.  If you have some First Nations heritage in your family background please feel free to share it with your child so they can share with the class.  We would love to hear about it.  On Wednesday we looked at a map of Canada and tried to locate where some of these groups lived.

In art we are learning about faces and how to draw them.  I have asked the students to find two pictures of faces to bring in to class next week.  We will use these pictures in our study.

Our class is in need of plastic forks and spoons to have on hand when needed for snack and lunch time.  Students are also asked, if possible, to bring in a set of head phones in a labeled ziplock bag to use for our Daily 5 time.

Thank you so much to those of you who have ordered books from our scholastic book orders.  I use all of the points to purchase books and things for our classroom.  So far this year I have purchased a lot of great books to add to our classroom library!

Have a great weekend!

Oct. 19, 2016

Our new socials unit has started.  Students have come up with some great questions to drive our learning!  Please see the October newsletter for a summary of the unit.  We will have a spelling test this week.  Next week is a short week and there will be no spelling test.  Our memory work for October is due on Oct. 31.  Students may say, write or draw the meaning of the memory work.  In Language Arts, students are working on their first writing assignment.  Students will write a letter to their favourite author.  We will work on this assignment at school.  Once the assignment is complete students may take the letter home and try to mail it to the author.  We will try to locate an address at school during our computer time.

Oct. 12, 2016

Students are working on reading fluency this week. Have your child practice reading out loud to you this week and check for fluency in reading.  They will take home a fluency book mark to help them remember what areas of fluency to work on.  I posted a fluency document in the forms and docs section. This explains some of the areas to work on when reading at home.  Our Bible test will not be this week but next week Tuesday.  All of the students did well on the Science Test.  Great job!  Have a wonderful week!
Please read the October newsletter for important information about what we will be learning this month.

Here is the memory work for this month.  Students may choose one of the assessment options for the memory work.  They may say it to me orally, fill in the  blanks sheet with written answers, or draw out what the verse means in class on October 31.

October: Memory Work Genesis 17:7-9

Due Monday, October 31

7 “I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”

9 Then God said to Abraham, “Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility.

Oct. 5, 2016

There will be a Thanksgiving Assembly on Thursday, Oct. 6.  This week we have been learning about writing letters.  Our first writing assignment will begin this week and students will have a chance to write a personal letter to someone.  We will start with a plan, then make a rough draft, and finish off with a final copy.  Students will hand in the final copy for assessment.  Then students will mail or deliver the letter.  There will be a science test on Thursday of this week.  Students involved in Cross Country will take the test on Friday.  A Bible review sheet will go home on Tuesday and we will have a Bible test next week Tuesday (Oct. 18).  Next week we will begin our Socials unit "Canadian Communities 1780-1850".  Our class will take a trip to the Westfield Pioneer Village in November for part of this unit.  Details will follow soon.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!  I am very thankful for this wonderful group of students who bring a smile to my face every day! :)

Sept. 28, 2016

On Thursday our class will lead a short assembly to kick off our Terry Fox Walk.  The assembly will be at 9:00 A.M. and we will head out on our walk at 9:15 AM.  Feel free to join us if you are able.  Next week we will conclude our Science unit on "Soils".  There will be a science test next week Thursday.  Please see review sheet coming home this week.

Some of the home reading sheets are being handed in.  Please let me know if you are in need of a new one.  Feel free to use the Raz Kids computer reading on the reading log.  I will send home a Raz Kids account sheet tomorrow.  These sheets may make it easier for kids to remember passwords and teacher usernames.

Book orders for October went home today.  They will be due next week Wednesday, Oct. 5.

A show and tell schedule will also go home tomorrow.  We will start show and tell next week.

Have a great day!

Sept. 21, 2016

In our science experiment this week we looked at how quickly water can run through different kinds of soil.  We discussed why it was important for certain types of soil to hold water.  Ask your child if they can name the different layers of soil.  They might remember the actions we learned to go with the different layers.

Today a spelling idea sheet went home.  My own kids usually tired of simply writing out their spelling words to practice.  Give some of these creative spelling activities a try.

From now on I will give a pre-test at the beginning of each month.  If students are able to spell all of the words correctly they will receive a spelling challenge list for each week in place of the Grade Three high frequency words.  They will not be given the words for the pre-test in advanced.  Our Grade Three High Frequency Words are at grade level so no need to be discouraged if your child doesn't pass the pre-test as they are quite a challenge already.

Next week Thursday there will be a whole school Terry Fox Walk.  Please send in a toonie to raise money for cancer research.  We will start the walk around 9:15 after a brief assembly.  Please join us if you are able.

Have a wonderful week!

Sept. 14, 2016

This week in Grade Three we had our first "All Grade Three Science Class".  On Tuesdays we will have all of the Grade Three students working on a science activity in groups.  This week we are trying to answer the question "What is in soil?"

In math we are looking at increasing and decreasing number patterns.  I will send a math practice sheet home today for you to try some of the concepts we are learning at school.  Students will get different sheets depending on their level of math knowledge for that Learning Goal.

Students are encouraged to read for at least 15 minutes every night. I have set up an account on RazKids for our class.  On this website students can read books at their reading level.  The website link is: https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login

Teacher user name is NadMas. The password is 12345678. On this website students can read books at their level and then answer questions to check for understanding. Let me know if you have trouble getting on the website.

Spelling Test: Week 1 on Friday

Sept. 7, 2016

We are well into our first week of Grade Three.  It has been an amazing start to the year!  Today we learned how to pick books that are a good fit for us.  Please read over our lesson outline (IPICK Good Books in the Forms and Docs section) and follow these steps when picking a book at home. Later this month I will have the students signed up with a RazKids account.  Students can sign in at home or at school and read books online at their reading level.  Details about how to access this account will be posted next week.  It is suggested that students read for at least 15 minutes every night.  I sent a reading log paper home so students can track their home reading.  They may read independently or with another person.  I have posted a few pictures on the Class Photos section.  Students were responding to the creation story in our Bible class.  This class is very creative and loves art!

Welcome to our first week of Grade Three.  Our week will start with an assembly on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 9:00 AM.  Students will then head to their classrooms.  We will spend most of the first week of school going through routines and procedures.  There are some students new to our school this year so we will also spend some time getting to know each other through various games and fun "get to know you" activities.  Please do not hesitate to send me an email with any questions.  I am so excited to get to know all of the students in Grade Three.
