The Musical Brush: Emotion in Art and Music
Jaime Valente and Abbie Liehr-DeFeo, teachers of the arts from Teaneck Community Charter School in Bergen County, were awarded a $9,801 grant from NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education to bring an intergenerational arts program to their students and their families.
The project allows students and an adult from their household to learn and create together as they receive instruction in both art and music simultaneously. The lessons focus on bridging the gap between music and art while providing subject matter knowledge in both areas. Sessions include a pair of complimentary artists from a culture that is represented in the community, while focusing on the similarities between composers and artists that demonstrate a connection between music and art.
Parents are invited to attend events to enjoy a musical composition while they work together with students on the same canvas. The result is a painting based on the musical composer they hear, using techniques learned by that evening’s artist. The resulting piece of artwork can be taken home, fostering the bond between student and adult, as well as school and home.
At the conclusion of the project, a brochure is created as a community outreach effort to secure donations for the next school year to purchase consumables, such as paint and canvases. The goal is to expand the program to a broader community at large through future years.
