OPPORTUNITIES

Wider Opportunities evolved following the government’s Wider Entitlement pledge that

‘…over time, all pupils in primary schools who wish to, will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument’.

Wider Opportunities programmes vary across the country, but all should be:
  • Open to all pupils at Key Stage 2
  • Taught in whole classes as part of the weekly curriculum
  • Free to pupils
  • An extended programme
  • Delivered in partnership
  • Part of an integrated, holistic musical approach
How does this work in Tavistock Learning Community?

All of the Primary Schools in Tavistock Learning Community receive one term's worth of weekly Wider Opportunities Teaching per academic year. The instruments offered by Music Academy Staff at present are violins, brass and clarinets. Each individual school decides which children or year groups receive the tuition.
When the Key Stage 2 children have received their Wider Opportunities lessons, they will be given the option to continue playing in Tavistock Music Academy's Next Steps ensembles.
