Design Brief
Conceptual Statement

Your local kindergarden school is wanting some new books to use with their children.
The children's favourite style of book is a "lift the flap" or pop-up type.
You are to design and make a model of a new lift the flap / pop-up book for the kindergarden to use with their children.

Task
Make a copy of this conceptual statement and put it onto the Design Brief document in the Student Documents folder at the bottom of the page.

Make sure you put this document in your Visual Design folder on your Google drive.

Examples

Project Analysis

You need to think about all the jobs that need doing so that the project can be finished.
It is like planning all your jobs in advance.

Task
Make a copy of this Google drawing by clicking on the link in the Student Documents at the bottom of the page Choose "make a copy" on the file menu.
You are then going to complete the diagram with all the jobs that need to be completed during this project.
Make sure you put this document in your Visual Design folder on your Google drive.

Initial Specification

These are the things that everyone must include in all of their design ideas.
  • Your book will have at least a front, 4 pages and a back.
  • The main body of the book will be made from card.
  • The target audience of your book will be 4-5 year olds.
  • Your book will be colourful.
You will be listing a few more of your own specifications later when you have done some research and initial idea work.

Task

Copy these specification points onto your Design Brief document, and leave room for at least 5 more of your own.
Make sure you put this document in your Visual Design folder on your Google drive.

Analysis of the Theme

On this diagram, you must include all of the themes that you can think of that might be used for a child's lift the flap book.
You can use pictures as well as words on this diagram ( use Google images to find your pictures )
Click the link in the Student Documents folder at the bottom of the page to get to the diagram and then make your own copy of it.
Make sure that you put this document in your Visual Design folder on your Google drive.

Research

In this part of the project, you are going to look at how to make the different interactive elements of the book.
You will also look at and analyse any learning elements that you might need for your book.

Lift the Flap

Here is one way to make a lift the flap section on a page.

Pop Up Mechanisms

Here are some worksheets that will help you to make 5 different types of pop up mechanism.
There is a copy of this document in the Student Documents at the bottom of the page.

Personal Specification

Here is where you are going to list all the points that YOU want to include in your design work.

Task
You are going to go back to the Design Brief document that you made earlier and add at least 5 more specification points to it that you want to be included in the design of the book.
These could include :-
  • Theme
  • Type of mechanism to use or which combination of different ones.
  • Story type.
  • The ages of the children who will use the book.
  • Any special needs of the children who will use the book.
  • What you are planning on teaching the children who will use the book.
There is a link to the Personal Specification Activities Document in the student documents at the bottom of the page.

Complete all the activities on this sheet to help you write your personal specification.

Now that you have done these activities, you are going to write your 3-5 chosen personal specification points onto the Design Brief document that you started earlier.

Concept Ideas

Character Designs

You are going to think about the characters that you want to have in your pop up book.
On the left side of your page, copy an expression for the "Expressions" exercise work.
On the right side of the page, draw a character that you might want to use in your book with that expression on its face.

Here are 2 examples of the copied expressions and the characters with that expression on their face.
Remember to use colour on the character.

Moving Elements

You are going to design lots of different elements that could be included in your book design.
For example the characters, backgrounds, parts under the flaps, the bits that are going to move, the lettering style etc....

Here are some examples of concept ideas for the different elements that are needed for your pop up book...

Developments, Mock ups and Experiments

In this part of the project, you are going to try out different parts of your ideas to see what works and what doesn't work as well as you thought it would.

 Mechanisms Which one will be the best to use for the different parts of the book?
 Materials Do you always have to use card, or can other materials be used in some parts? What other materials can you use?
 Colours What colours and colour combinations produce the best results?
 Fonts Which font styles are the best to use?
Do the same ones have to be
used in all parts of the book?

Analysis of your development work

During all of these steps, you have to think about what you are doing.
Does it work? Does it not work? Why not?

Task
Open the Analysis of Design Development document in the Student Documents.
Fill it in for all of your design development work.

Planning

  • You need to plan what is going to be on every page so that you know what you need to prepare for each page as you are making them.
  • You will also be listing all the materials that you are going to be using.
  • You will do a job plan in the form of a flow chart, so that you know what order to do everything in so the book is produced correctly and to a high quality.

Page Planner

Use the link in the Student Documents for the page planner.
You will need to plan the front and back and pages 1,2,3 and 4.
Use as many of these as you need until to get the planning as you want it.

Production Plan

Use the production plan link in the Student Documents.
Complete this plan with all the steps that you need to complete in order to make your final pop up  / lift the flap book.

Production

This is where you will be making your book.
Make sure you are thinking all the time about the quality of your work and not just rushing it.
Referring to your job plan at all times makes sure that you are completing all the steps and doing things in the right order.
~~~QUALITY~~~
Evaluation
You need to look at your finished book and analyse how well you have produced both the design ideas and the final book.
Click on the Evaluation link in the Student Documents.
