Principal's Message

St. Raphael’s Catholic Primary School is situated in South Hurstville, towards the southern area of Sydney, and is part of the Mater Dei Blakehurst and St Raphael’s South Hurstville Parish. It is a  single stream, co-educational school catering for approximately 225 boys and girls from Kindergarten to Year 6. We welcome children and their families from many different cultures and enjoy the richness that such diversity brings.

As an authentic Christ-centered community, we believe that we are called to live in a spirit of harmony and are committed to be messengers of hope and healing in our world. We practise this mission in the everyday life of our school.

The core values of our school are based on the Gospel values. At St Raphael’s we regularly celebrate and demonstrate our faith. Working together with parents, our Parish Priest and Pastoral Associate, we aim to give children a sound understanding of our Catholic doctrine, scripture, tradition and Gospel values, and emphasise the importance of living this in our daily lives. The principles of restorative justice and the Schoolwide Positive Behaviours for Learning (SPBL) framework are implemented across the school to form the foundation of our Student Wellbeing Policy.

The school curriculum provides strong foundational learning in Religious Education and all Key Learning Areas. Specialist programs and extra-curricular offerings assist in providing a comprehensive curriculum. Information Communication Technology (ICT) is integrated into all teaching programs. Bring Your Own Designated Device (BYODD) practices have been established across Years 2 to 6. A whole school approach to teaching and learning, consistent with the Sydney Archdiocesan Position Papers is evident across the school. Structures exist to support a highly effective differentiation of the curriculum. Students are grouped according to learning needs from Kindergarten to Year 6. The constant review of teaching and learning and assessment intentions contribute to a deeper understanding of the learner. Well established cooperative planning and coaching practices have ensured there is  a greater knowledge of the learner and a shared responsibility amongst the teachers for student learning. The school offers the Newman  Selective Education Program which provides  high-quality professional learning for staff and an authentically rigorous program for gifted learners within a nurturing Catholic environment, thus enhancing the whole-person. It offers a wide range of opportunities that cater for a variety of gifted learners and supports students’ social and emotional well being.

The staff have a continued commitment to improvement and excellence in all facets of Catholic Education.
