Principal's Message

Welcome to St Gertrude’s Catholic Primary School website. It will provide you with the information you need to learn more about our school.

St Gertrude’s is a co-educational Catholic Primary School located in Smithfield in south-western Sydney, within St Gertrude’s Parish. The current enrolment includes 28 class groups. The school operates within an area of large cultural diversity, with the students enrolled reflecting an amalgam of 25 cultural backgrounds.

St Gertrude’s was opened in January 1952 by the Josephite Sisters and continues today to foster the values and traditions of St Mary of the Cross.

Our school motto “Desire God and Learning” affirms our commitment to learning, to nurturing our faith and growing in hope as a community.

At St Gertrude’s we are committed to developing and sustaining an Authentic Catholic School.  We promote our Vision and Mission Statements. Our Whole School Behaviour Guidelines are underpinned by the principles of an Authentic Catholic School. These principles are embedded through our practices of:

·         Be respectful

·         Be responsible

·         Be safe.

All of our learning areas are bright, environmentally controlled (heating and cooling) and well maintained. Each classroom contains an Interactive Whiteboard or SMART TV with internet access. In addition, the students have access to Laptops with wireless technology. iPads are used to support learning across all areas of curriculum.

The school offers a number of additional programs that support student learning including Reading Recovery and  a Quicksmart Mathematics intervention program. We promote reading through our Early Bird Reading Program.

We also provide opportunities for students to participate in Public Speaking, Music, Dance and Drama programs. We also have a specialist sports teacher who provides opportunities for students to be involved in a variety of experiences.

I feel welcomed to this community in my third year at St Gertude’s.  I am privileged in my role as Principal.

Mrs Linda O'Regan
