For Students

Student Leaders

As important members of the school community, students are valued for the contributions they can make to the school. Leadership potential is encouraged and supported. All of our Year 6 students are school leaders.

In addition to this our Year 3-6 classes also choose a student voted to be part of the School Representative Council each term. Our eight Colour Captains from Year 6 assist with school carnivals and sporting events. Students from Years 3-6 make up the School-wide Positive Behaviours for Learning (SPBL) team.

Our Year 6 students also take turns in being ‘Playground Buddies’: they wear a fluorescent vest at playtimes and are available for students who may need assistance.

Students from Years 5 develop their leadership potential by volunteering to be Library Monitors.

Kinder and Year 6 buddies

To assist in the transition into school, our Year 6 student leaders are responsible for the Kindergarten students. Each Kinder student is ‘buddied up’ with a Year 6 student who develops a close relationship with the Kindergarten student and looks out for them at school. There are also opportunities for the Kindergarten students and buddies to work together and so nurture the close bond. This assists the Kindergarten students to develop positive attitudes to their school life. It is also a leadership responsibility for the Year 6 students.

Interschool Activities

The students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities with other schools. All extra-curricular activities are optional. Examples include Debating and CaSPA (Catholic schools Performing Arts).

Debating is a valuable form of communicating a certain position on a specific topic. It involves developing and presenting an argument in a team environment. Debating in a public forum fosters student confidence and co-operation. Each year our senior students are given the opportunity to take part in the Eastern Region Debating competition.

Students at St Declan’s are given the opportunity to develop skills in a wide variety of sports. Outside specialists deliver programs in areas such as gymnastics, basketball, rugby league, cricket and ball skills. Students in Years 3-6 also have the opportunity, as part of the Sydney Archdiocese, to represent the school at interschool events for Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics and other selective sports such as Soccer, Rugby, League, Tennis, Basketball, Netball and Cricket. The school has a Swimming and Athletic Carnival each year.

Creative and Practical Arts

A specialist Creative Arts teacher is employed to work with each of the classes for an hour each week. This program includes music, drama and dance. Students from St Declan’s are encouraged to take part in the Performing Arts Festivals that are periodically organised by the Catholic school system.

Other activities currently offered at school include Band, Chess Club, School Choir, School Dance Group and the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
