For Parents

Parental involvement is vitally important to the life of our school. We see it as building a partnership between parents, children and teachers, while supporting the faith and values we share as common beliefs.

At St Mary-St Joseph Catholic Primary School a number of parent committees are formed to ensure this collaboration, while social events held throughout the year foster community.

Principal's Advisory Council

School Advisory Councils are a Sydney Archdiocesan Catholic School (SACS) Board initiative. The CEO Sydney's Building on Strength Strategic Improvement Plan commits Sydney Catholic Schools to a culture of meaningful consultation and engagement with parents and parishes.

The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a forum that consults, listens and seeks feedback and wisdom from the local school and parish communities so that these communities work together to achieve common goals.

These goals include:

  • effectively reflecting local community issues and needs
  • increasing parent engagement with Advisory Councils
  • effectively strengthening links between school and parish.

The SAC provides feedback, support and advice to the Principal, makes recommendations to the Principal, supports the school Principal, and is accountable to the Principal.

Assemblies

A Flag Raising Assembly will be held every Monday at 8.50am where the School Prayer and an Acknowledgement of Country will be said. The National Anthem is also sung.

Parents and the school community are invited to our weekly assembly which takes place every Friday afternoon at 2.45pm in the school hall.

School captains and prefects lead the assembly, which consists of the following:

  • Welcome to Country
  • National Anthem.
  • Principal Awards
  • Message from the Principal
  • Student of the Week awards
  • Strength and Gentleness Awards
  • Class Items and
  • Sharing news.

School Uniform

The uniform shop at school has some school items available for purchase. These include sport uniforms, school hats and school bags. The shop is open on Fridays from 8:20 am to 8:50 am. Orders can also be made through the School Office.

Application for Exemption from Attendance at School

Holidays are to be taken during school holidays. If a family holiday is arranged during school time, a letter requesting leave must be addressed to both the Principal and Homeroom Teacher.  Holidays which are 10 school days or less require a note sent to the Principal prior to the absence.  No other form is required to be filled in. This will be counted as Leave on the class roll and counted in the total of the student’s absence from school.

Holidays of more than 10 school days and less than 100 also require a written letter to the Principal requesting leave.  If approval is granted, parent/carers will receive an application form to be filled in prior to the leave being taken.  If approved by the Principal the leave will be recorded as L in the class roll and be counted in the total of the student’s absence from school.  If it not approved it will be recorded as an unexplained absence.
