Laptop and Internet Usage Policy




The College provides laptops and Internet access for all students to assist with daily teaching and learning and other educational purposes. The students laptops and College Internet service is not for a students personal use, especially when it affects the teaching and learning that occurs in the classroom. The misuse of these items can dramatically affect their performance.

Misuse of the College Laptop includes:

  • Downloading of any material which infringes copyright

  • Storing of games, movies / television shows on the laptop for personal rather than educational use

  • Storing of any illegal software

  • Downloading or storing of any pornographic material

  • Accessing inappropriate websites during class time – including games sites, social media sites or any other site not

    designated by the classroom teacher to the specific educational task.

  • Any attempt to breach the College Internet security measures.

  • Renaming the laptop and creating additional accounts on the laptop

  • Installing any other operating system

    Procedure

    For students who are found to misuse the laptops and/or Internet service, the following procedures will apply:

  1. The staff member may confiscate the student’s laptop and take it to the ICT technicians.

  2. The staff member will complete a teacher incident report to be given to the students Year Co-ordinator.

  3. The ICT technicians will notify the students Year Co-ordinator that they have received the student’s laptop.

  4. The Year Co-ordinator will interview the student regarding the alleged misuse of the laptop / Internet.

  5. The Year Co-ordinator will inform the ICT technicians of the decision regarding the misuse of the student’s laptop /

    Internet. If the laptop is deemed to have been misused, the student’s laptop will be erased of all content and returned

    to its default state and will have restrictions placed on their laptop for a period of two weeks.

  6. Before erasing, the student will be given the opportunity to backup educational content from the laptop.

  7. The Year Co-ordinator will inform the student’s parents of the misuse of the laptop and consequences.

    Subsequent Offences

  • A student’s second offence will result in erasure of all content and restrictions being placed on their laptop for a period of four weeks. The Year Co-ordinator will inform the student’s parents of the misuse of the laptop and consequences. The student will be given the opportunity to backup any educational content from the laptop.

  • A student’s third offence will result in the erasure of all content and restrictions being placed on their laptop for an indefinite period (to be determined by the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator and the Year Co-ordinator). The student will be given the opportunity to backup any educational content from the laptop. The Pastoral Care Coordinator will be informed and the student may be suspended until a parent interview has occurred to discuss the matter in detail. The laptop will not be returned without a Parental interview occurring.

    Additional

  • Any attempted breaches of the College’s internet security will result in the confiscation of the student’s laptop for an unlimited period, the erasure of all content and restrictions being placed on the laptop for an indefinite period (to be determined by the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator and the Year Co-ordinator). The student will be suspended from the College and a parental interview will be held. The police may be contacted. The laptop will not be returned without a Parental interview occurring.

  • Pornographic images / videos located on the student’s laptop will result in the confiscation of the student’s laptop for an unlimited period, the erasure of all content and restrictions being placed on the laptop for an indefinite period (to be determined by the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator and the Year Co-ordinator). The student will be suspended from the College and a parental interview will be held. If the images / video are criminal in nature, the police will be contacted. The laptop will not be returned without a Parental interview occurring.
