The International 2016 Exhibition of School Planning & Architectural Award Winners, conducted by the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) have just been announced.

Our Lady of Assumption have just been awarded another prestigious award for learning design. Nominations for the International 2016 Exhibition of School Planning and Architectural Awards were given to projects that won A4LE awards at a national level. So from national, we move to an international award for Renovation/Addition. This prestigious Award is known as the Lee J. Brockway Award, after a distinguished Architect who introduced the idea of listening to communities in the design process.

When OLA won the Australian award earlier this year it was described by the jury as “a triumph of understated simplicity, informed by both theory and practice”. Exemplifying, utilising community consultation and involvement in the design process, the building company, BVN worked closely with Cathy Young as school Principal and members of the Sydney Catholic Schools Office to understand the physical requirements of this new school being developed around a theory of student-centred learning.

The result according to the Australian Award jury is “an elegant and playful-reimagining of school on many levels that started with the repurposing of a commercial services building into a place of learning that honours diverse ways of coming to know.”

A wonderful acknowledgment of the design focus to ensure that the young students and their families at OLA have every opportunity to learn in an environment that supports future thinking.
