For Students

Mater Dei endeavours to promote a healthy, supportive and secure environment for all children. Student welfare is a shared responsibility between home, school, parish and the community. A special feature of the pastoral care and discipline in the school is the Restorative Justice approach used in dealing with conflict, with Year 5 students trained as leaders in restorative problem solving. In Years 5 and 6, these students act as Peer Mediators to provide playground assistance for younger students. We have implemented 1-2-3 Magic from Kindergarten to Year 6 to assist students in developing self-control.  Workshops using this approach are also provided to support parents. The school has also implemented buddies and student awards to encourage positive social behaviours and problem-solving skills.

Leadership potential is encouraged and supported and students are valued for the contributions they can make to the school. Our student leadership team consists of two School Captains, two School Vice Captains and two Sport Captains for each of the three Sport Houses: Perkins (green), Cuthbert (red) and Bradman (gold). Our School Captains and Vice Captains lead our Student Representative Council with students from Year 2 to Year 5. These student leaders are voted for by the students and staff each year. An active role description exists for each position and student voice is encouraged. The SRC meet on a fortnightly basis with a member of the School Leadership Team.

Mater Dei also gives students the opportunity to take part in a number of additional leadership roles. Students may apply for the following positions:

  • Technology Team (a Year 6 student is allocated to each class in the school)
