Curriculum

In 2014, Marion Catholic School will introduce the English K-10 Australian Curriculum. New South Wales joined with the Australian Government to develop an Australian Curriculum. The Board of Studies NSW developed new K-10 syllabuses for English, Mathematics, Science and History that incorporate agreed Australian curriculum content. Preparation for the introduction of Mathematics, Science and History is in progress.

Religious Education

Religious Education is at the heart of teaching and learning. It informs and influences all learning and is the major integrating force within all Key Learning Areas. Religious Education includes learning experiences that will allow children to develop skills, values and attitudes that will help them to be active members of their faith community.

Through our teaching and living of the Catholic faith, we aim to pass on to the students an understanding and love of Jesus Christ, a respect for themselves as people of God, an awareness of others and their worth and a model for their lives based on Gospel values. The school teaching and learning program in Religious Education is based on the Sydney Catholic Education Office curriculum To Know, Worship and Love. English

Competence in English will enable students to learn about the role of language in their own lives, within their own culture as well as within other cultures. They will then be able to communicate their thoughts and feelings, to participate in society, to make informed decisions about personal and social issues, to analyse information and viewpoints, to use their imaginations and to think about the influence of culture on the meanings made with language. The English K-6 Syllabus is inclusive of the learning needs of all students.

Mathematics

The study of Mathematics provides opportunities for students to learn to describe and apply patterns and relationships; reason, predict, and solve problems; calculate accurately both mentally and in written form; estimate and measure; and interpret and communicate information presented in numerical, geometrical, graphical, statistical and algebraic forms.

Students will have the opportunity to develop an appreciation of mathematics and its applications in their everyday lives and in the worlds of science, technology, commerce, the arts and employment.

Science

Science education assists students to understand themselves and the environment, and provides opportunities for them to develop independent rational thought and responsible action. It emphasises first-hand experiences, investigating, design,problem-solving and clarifying understandings. Human Society and its Environment

Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) provides a knowledge base for students to gain understandings about change and continuity, cultures, environments and social systems and structures. Students will have opportunities to learn aboutpeople and the environments with which they interact. This knowledge base provides the foundation for studies of Australian and world history and geography, for social, cultural and legal studies, for environmental and economic studies, and for citizenship education.

This key learning area provides opportunities for students to ask challenging questions, to be curious and to develop a lifelong love of learning. It focuses on developing inquiry learning skills and providing experiences that are meaningful for students, engaging in actual people, places and issues wherever possible. Through analysing information and values, students can make responsible decisions about social, economic, religious, civic and environmental issues that may affect them now or in the future. Creative Arts

Creative Arts provides students with the opportunity to gain skills and understanding in the areas of Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

PDHPE develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes students need to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives. Students learn about the importance of good food and regular exercise. They learn how bodies grow and change over time. They learn skills to play individual and team sports, and the values of sportsmanship and teamwork.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education is an important Key Learning Area within the primary curriculum as it:

  • encourages an understanding and valuing of self and others
  • promotes physical activity
  • emphasises informed decision-making, leading to effective and responsible action.

More specifically, the study of PDHPE is concerned with:

  • physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth and development patterns
  • the development and maintenance of positive interpersonal relationships
  • the factors influencing personal health choices
  • living and learning in a safe secure environment
  • the adoption of an active lifestyle
  • fundamental movement patterns and coordinated actions of the body
  • skills that enable action for better health and movement outcomes.
