The Newman Program at De La Salle College, Revesby

We are pleased to announce that De La Salle College Revesby has been granted entry into the Newman Gifted Education Program this year.  After a very rigorous process of research, discussion and discernment, the College applied for inclusion in this program.

Our school is one of four secondary schools and eight primary schools across the Archdiocese to commence the Program in 2016. As such, all of our teaching staff will participate in numerous Professional Learning opportunities to further enrich the ability to differentiate classroom practice to engage ALL learners, regardless of ability.

As part of our inclusion in the Newman Program, we have established a Newman Stream class, with the following data used for student selection:

        i.            AGAT Testing;

           ii.           PAT Maths;

       iii.        NAPLAN;

        iv.     Teacher Nomination.

All students in 7.1 (the Newman Stream) will be given numerous opportunities to enrich and extend their learning beyond the scope of the curriculum. This will culminate in a student-led symposium in Term 4 this year.  More information on this exciting new initiative will follow at the commencement of Term 3.

The College has committed to:

  • Introducing a Newman stream class , commencing with Year 7 (7.1), with a view to extend this opportunity to students in Years 7, 8 and 9 over the next three years;

  • Differentiating the curriculum and assessment to support the learning needs of students selected for these classes;

  • The implementation of  a streamlined and structured Gifted Education Policy;

  • Building teacher capacity to enrich the teaching and learning experiences in our classrooms. In 2016, all of our teaching staff will undertake the Mini Certificate in Gifted Education, run by the Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre, from the University of NSW.
