Benton Harbor, MI.— On Monday December 29, representatives from Whirlpool Veterans Association (WVA) and SWMI RACERS met with Jennifer Petre, Founder of Stiggy’s Dogs, at American Legion Post 298 in Battle Creek. Based in Howell Michigan, Stiggy’s Dogs is a 501(c)3 organization that rescues and trains shelter dogs to be psychiatric service dogs for military veterans living with PTSD or TBI. Dogs are trained and deployed at no cost to veterans.
SWMI RACERS and WVA teamed up to raise funds for Stiggy’s Dogs in honor of Veterans Day. Fundraising activities throughout November included RACERS Rescue Run 5K, collection of training supplies at Paw Mart in St. Joseph, Carson’s Community Days fundraiser and a give back night at Wings Etc in Benton Harbor.Marianne Groth, SWMI RACERS President, presented training supplies and a check for $2900 to Stiggy’s Dogs. “I would like to thank Michael Rothwell, Commander of American Legion Post 298 in Battle Creek for welcoming SWMI RACERS, WVA and Stiggy’s Dogs to the post as we strive to help our nation’s veterans,” says Groth. The monetary donation and supplies will be used for the next group of veteran and dog partners beginning training. “Costs for the entire training program can total $8000 per veteran and dog pair,” notes Jennifer Petre.
"WVA looks forward to a continued relationship with Stiggy’s Dogs and the RACERS Rescue Run will continue as an annual event to honor Veterans Day," says Bob Lemyre, VP of Purchasing Global Operations at Whirlpool Corporation and one of the working leads for Whirlpool Veterans Association. "Our 2015 goal is to raise funds to provide training for at least one veteran and dog pair.”
A Memorial Tribute to Bill Magley - Friend, Trainer and Sponsor
He was the kind of enthusiastic, fun-loving man that you may have only met once but will remember forever. His zest for life, his love of the outdoors, his 'give it your all' attitude was infectious. Many describe him as "larger than life".
Bill clearly made an impact on every person that was lucky enough to cross paths with him.
We honor Bill's life by remembering...
"Who will greet me at the door with a high five, positive attitude, and blow up my phone with encouraging texts?
Who will chain me to trees, bungie me to strangers, and Velcro my legs together?
Who will destroy my manicure, take unflattering pictures of me mid- flex, and congratulate me on vomiting?
Who will teach me to be a ninja and turn me into a hungarian shot-putter?
Who will be proud of us even when we are not proud of ourselves?
The machine gun press will not be missed, but you will Bill."
"Coach Mags you will be missed by so many people!!!! You helped me out so much with my running/ training and you would push me until I couldn't go anymore!!! I learned a lot from you!!! SWMI lost a great man, coach and trainer!! You would always text me before and after one of my half marathon runs and wish me luck and tell me great job!! The saying you always told me was "Run, Scott, Run"!! R.I.P Coach Mags!! You will be missed but never forgotten!"
Personally, I first met Bill Magley almost four years after seeing pictures on Facebook of co-workers during their workouts with Nature's Fitness. I was intrigued and wanted to see what he was all about, so I gave Bill a call. He was a friendly, larger than life guy and you couldn't help but like him immediately! I trained with Bill off and on for about six months in 2012, and he always pushed me to attain goals I hadn't thought possible. His workouts were never the same, and I never knew what to expect when I showed up for a training session! Bill had a way of bringing athletes of different fitness levels together, allowing all to work together as a team without hindering the performance of any individual. Even once my training sessions stopped, the friendship didn't end. I would receive texts and messages from Bill as I prepped for a big race. I can still hear his voice in my mind telling me to keep pushing through!
In late 2013 Bill and I reconnected on a professional level when he expressed an interest in sponsoring SWMI RACERS. As a sponsor throughout 2014, Bill supported the club, the members, and the community through activities and donations alike. Bill made an impact on so many people, and SWMI RACERS will truly miss Bill's spirit!
-Marianne Groth, RACERS President
"I was not one of his clients but did get an invite from him to go night snowshoeing out at Weko Beach a few years ago. It was a hard workout but I love snowshoeing so it was very enjoyable. We became Facebook friends and he and I would comment on our experiences and trips to the northern Michigan. Manistee Trail was a favorite to hike! The community has lost a great mentor and motivator. So very sad."
On Tuesday November 18 over 60 people whose lives were touched by Bill Magley in some way or another gathered together to remember and honor Bill's life with a hike through Grand Mere Park, one of Bill's favorite places. Bill will not be forgotten!
St. Joseph, Mich. — After over two years in business as a non-profit club for runners and walkers serving Southwest Michigan, SWMI RACERS (Red Arrow Club for Endurance, Running and walking Sports) has taken the next step to align to members’ needs.
“We found many of our members were actively training and participating in multisport events,” says SWMI RACERS President Marianne Groth. “Unfortunately, our group insurance only covered running and walking activities. We needed to make a change and we did!”
In response to member requests at a June Board Meeting to incorporate swimming, cycling, and triathlon events to the club’s offerings, SWMI RACERS board members went to work to make that request a reality! SWMI RACERS is pleased to announce the club is both an Official USA Triathlon Club and an IRONMAN TriClub. No matter what level of experience or athletic ability, members can now join SWMI RACERS as a runner, walker or triathlete. Seasoned triathletes as well as those just exploring the sport will find joining a triathlon club will enhance their triathlon experience.
The benefits of joining a USA Triathlon Club include race discounts exclusively for USAT Clubs, as well as participating in the USA Triathlon Club National Championships. IRONMAN TriClubs have benefits including TriClub Villages and the chance to race against one another all year long for prizes and bragging rights. To complement this new option, SWMI RACERS plans to offer group swims and group cycling in addition to current group run/walks.
SWMI RACERS formed a partnership with current club sponsor Elizabeth Coaching, which extends an additional benefit to Tri Club members. Anyone who renews or joins SWMI RACERS as a Tri Club member will receive an 8 week Sprint distance triathlon training plan OR a 12 week Olympic distance triathlon training plan. Special pricing from Elizabeth Coaching is available for SWMI RACERS who plan to compete in half distance (70.3) triathlons or a full distance (140.6) triathlon.
The Inaugural RACERS Rescue Run 5K capped off a great year for SWMI RACERS with temperatures in the mid 50s and no rain or snow! We were honored to have veteran GL and his service dog Ammo join us for our first event. GL is a Purple Heart recipient, and has been with Ammo since August 2013.
A special thanks to the 415th Civil Affairs Battalion for providing tents to shelter us from the wind. Our sponsors Mutterly Love and Martin's Paw Mart were both on site to provide water and treats for the 13 four legged finishers. Over 60 two legged finishers ran or walked the 5K course and over 30 SWMI RACERS members ran, walked or volunteered!
