Elementary Curriculum

Southwestern Christian Elementary School ( SWCS ) consists of the grades Kindergarten through fifth. 


Distinctly Christian Instruction


SWCS teaches Bible as a regular course in the school day. The ABeka Bible curriculum is used in grades K-3, focusing on God’s love and offer of salvation.  Grades 4 and 5 use BJU Press Bible for a more in-depth study of God’s Word.

  • Kindergarten through grade 2 > Visualized Bible stories, songs, and memory verses
  • Grade 3 > Parables, the Old Testament, Paul's jouneys
  • Grades 4 and 5 > Bible Truths - God and His People
Language Arts


Our language arts program is inclusive of English language grammar, reading, writing, handwriting, listening, speaking and literature. 

  • Kindergarten > ABeka Reading and Language Series, as well as the D'nealian penmanship and creative writing program. Kindergarteners may also be given the opportunity to participate in Accelerated Reader once they have shown themselves to be a proficient and independent readers.
  • Grade 1 > ABeka Reading and Language Series, BJU Phonics and Spelling, and Accelerated Reader starting in the fourth quarter of first grade.  
  • Grades 2-5 > BJU Press Literature, grammar, and writing series. Also Accelerated Reader

Mathematics


Students are taught the concepts of numbers, math computation, and math applications.  Kindergarten through third grade use ABeka Mathematics Series.  Grades 4-8 use the Saxon Math series.


Social Sciences


Southwestern Christian School takes and integrated studies approach to the social sciences curriculum combining the subjects of history ( both world and United States ), geography, government / political science, economics, anthropology, and sociology. Through the use of ABeka, BJU Press, and interactive notebook for social science instruction, the students are introduced to these social science studies from a Christian perspective.


Science


Southwestern Christian School also takes an integrated studies approach to the sciences curriculum combining the subjects of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and astronomy. Through the use of ABeka and BJU Press the students are introduced to these science studies from a Christian perspective.


Physical Education


Physical fitness skills and personal social skills are taught weekly in Kindergarten through Grade 5.  A wide variety of age appropriate team and individual activities are taught.


Art


Grades K-5 participate in year round formal art instruction.  They gain knowledge on artists, technique, and then produce original creations.


Computer


Students in Grades 1-8 are scheduled twice weekly with our computer instructor who works to develop students knowledge and understanding of the computer, its usage, and proper operation.  In addition, students gain skills in keyboarding, use of Microsoft's Windows operating system, browsers, and application programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher. An emphasis is also placed on and internet safety.  


Each classroom has computers for student use.  These computers are primarily used for Renaissance Learning, research, and web based assessments.  Classroom teachers may also schedule time to use the regular computer lab or Chromebook lab for additional projects or testing.

Special Programs 


Not limited to, but including > Weekly Chapel ( skits, songs, sign language ), orchestra, Intramural sports,  Cooperative and Discovery Learning, Life Skills, Guest Speakers, Science Day, Talent Show, Track & Field, Walkathon, Thanksgiving Program, Outreach ( Crossroads Mission Family Shelter “Bundles of Joy”, Tumaini Child Sponsorship in Africa, and Operation Christmas Child Boxes ), and the Yuma County Spelling Bee


Field Trips  


Not limited to, but including > Kartchner Caverns, Yuma Water Treatment Plant, Yuma Proving Ground (YPG), Julian Mining Co., AWC Geology Department, Ballet Performing Arts, State Capitol, Music Museum, Reuben Fleet Museum, Quartermaster Depot, Yuma Territorial Prison, Century House Museum, Yuco Cotton Gin; Ballet ( Nutcracker, Ballet de Suess, Hansel & Gretel ); Yuma Fire Department, Midway, and the Marine Corps Air Station
