4th Grade Printmaking Self-Portraits

posted May 3, 2017, 10:48 AM by Jessica Burley

Our fourth graders made self-portraits by drawing their faces, adding backgrounds, and borders. Then they transferred their ideas to foam printing plates, carved deep and made prints! They made an edition of 2 by rolling out the ink with brayers and printing! Nice work, 4th grade!
One of our art standards in 4th grade is about reflecting on our artwork and we're using technology today to reflect on our self portraits! Please read our ideas about our artwork.

3rd Grade Clay Castles

posted May 1, 2017, 8:32 AM by Jessica Burley

The third graders studied European medieval art this year, including castles. We made these awesome towers by rolling a slab of clay, wrapping it around a form, slip and scoring it to a base of clay, then adding details. It was hard work! After they were bisque fired, we used glazes to paint our castles, then fired them again to make them shiny.
We're experimenting with using technology to reflect on our artwork and share it here on our website. We hope you enjoy our reflections on the clay process.

4th Grade Clay Animal Effigies

posted Apr 27, 2017, 9:32 AM by Jessica Burley

We started the year with a prehistoric Native American unit, including the Hopewell people. In the Tremper Mound in Ohio, archeologists found beautiful animal effigies which provided the inspiration for our sculptures. We all picked an Ohio animal, then sculpted it out of clay on a curved base. After they were bisque fired, we used glazes to paint our animals, then fired them again to make them shiny.

We've been experimenting with using technology as a way to reflect on our artmaking process. We hope you enjoy our reflections on our clay experience.

2nd Grade Ancient Egypt Landscapes

posted Feb 25, 2016, 5:01 AM by Jessica Burley

Our second grade students have started a new Ancient Egypt unit! They are learning where Egypt is, about Ancient Egyptian architecture, and we're reading about what it would be like to be a kid in Ancient Egypt.

The students have also been working to blend chalk pastels and use them to make landscapes with the Nile River and deserts. We then added pyramids, the Sphinx, and obelisks. Many students added details like people fishing, riding in boats down the Nile, farming or going to festivals. Some students even drew crocodiles, hippos, birds and other Egyptian animals.

posted Feb 18, 2016, 12:09 PM by Jessica Burley   [ updated Feb 18, 2016, 12:10 PM ]

Our first grade students have switched habitats to the American Southwest desert! We read the nonfiction book Desert Hotel and discussed the animals and plants that live in the desert.

We have been using oil pastels to create sand dunes and mountains, then cacti and awesome desert animals. Then we used collage techniques to assemble our deserts!

We hope you enjoy our deserts, including our giant cacti, woodpeckers, coyotes, snakes, tortoises, birds, jackrabbits, bats and other desert animals!

1st Grade Antarctica Penguins

posted Dec 21, 2015, 9:04 AM by Jessica Burley

The first graders have been studying the habitat of Antarctica. After looking at maps and reading about Antarctica, the first grade students played with blending watercolor and adding salt. The next week, we used shapes to make penguins. Some of us added whales, fish, squid, baby penguins, and more!

Look at our great penguins who love to swim in the ocean, hang out on icebergs and eat fish!

4th Grade Andy Goldsworthy Projects

posted Dec 16, 2015, 9:03 AM by Jessica Burley   [ updated Dec 16, 2015, 11:48 AM ]

This 9 weeks, the fourth graders have been studying nature in art. Earlier in the fall, we looked at a modern artist, Andy Goldsworthy, and thought about how he used nature to make temporary artworks. Unlike the Native Americans we studied earlier, whose work lasts for hundreds of years, Goldsworthy's work is made on site and disappears. Here are some of the images we studied:
Then the students used natural materials like leaves, sticks, seeds, and rocks to make quick installations.
Here are a few of the students' ideas and thoughts about this work:
"We made the leaves into a circle and had a different leave to make it look a little bit different." - Ava
"I liked making the circle with the leaves it look cool and it stuck out." - Shelby
"I believe that nature never will stay the same. Many things are changing as we speak." - Ben
"If I would make a outdoor sculpture it would be a bridge out of sticks because if there is a little river people can walk over it so they won't get wet." - Nidhi

Please enjoy our photos of our installations!

1st Grade Forest Habitats

posted Nov 10, 2015, 11:19 AM by Jessica Burley   [ updated Nov 10, 2015, 11:20 AM ]

Our first graders have been reading forest books, discussing animals that live in Ohio and thinking about shelter, water, and food. We used these ideas to make our own forests, complete with animals! We painted our backgrounds, bark and leaves, cut out our trees, then added forest animals by using shapes. We hope you enjoy looking at our forest.

2nd Grade Self Portraits.... When I Grow Up!

posted Nov 3, 2015, 12:01 PM by Jessica Burley   [ updated Nov 4, 2015, 5:28 PM ]

We've been discussing careers in second grade, talking about what do we want to be when we grow up!
We read a fiction book to explore silly ideas and a nonfiction book to look at unusual careers in the world.

Then we drew and painted self-portraits of ourselves all grown up in our future jobs. We have athletes, surveyors, artists, teachers, engineers, doctors, police officers, scientists, and many more! Nice work, 2nd grade!

3rd Grade Hero Self Portraits

posted Oct 27, 2015, 12:16 PM by Jessica Burley   [ updated Oct 27, 2015, 12:23 PM ]

The third graders have been studying quests and fairy tales. After reading and discussing quests, we created self-portraits with us as the heroes and heroines! We practiced drawing people with joints and movement and added lots of details to our background.

Here our some ideas about quests and heroes from our third graders:

"A quest is like a adventure. They are a important because you might end up with a good imagination." - Maleah
"Quests are to help people. Helping people is important. A quest is a adventure to gain something,or help somebody." - Troy
"A hero is a person who saves somebody." - Hamza
"A person makes a good hero by doing what's right, helping out and being a good person. That is what makes a good hero." - Kandice

Please take a look at our great self-portraits!
